NEWPORT, R.I. (Saturday, January 6, 2024) -- The Salve Regina University men's basketball team won its second straight NEWMAC contest and first-ever inside the Rodgers Recreation Center as the Seahawks defeated the visiting Pride of Springfield College, 73-57, on Saturday afternoon.

Junior tri-captain Declan Walmsley (Franklin, Mass.) led the Seahawks (8-5, 2-2 NEWMAC) with 16 points including four of the team's nine treys. Joseph Hoch (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) also had 16 points in a losing effort for Springfield (4-8, 1-2 NEWMAC); he made 6-of-8 field goals including three 3-pointers and 1-for-1 at the line.

All-Time Series: Seahawks pick up their second NEWMAC victory and first ever over the Pride. Springfield won the only previous meeting, 77-49, on January 2, 2010. The teams will meet again this season in Springfield at the end of the month.

SUMMARY:

  • 1H - Declan Walmsley's 3-pointer at 16:32 broke a 6-6 tie (the third and final deadlock of the game) and Miles Fiore followed with a jumper in the paint. Walmsley added two more treys in the period as Salve Regina earned a double-digit lead on five occasions over the first 20 minutes. Clay Brochu, Will Parisi, and Brady Spencer added triples for the Seahawks, the latter two off the bench. The Seahawks moved the ball well with 11 assists on their 13 field goals, led by James Jolly with five helpers. The Pride scored 10 points off four Seahak turnovers. | Seahawks 35, Pride 26
  • 2H - Will Parisi swished a 3-pointer from the top of the arc at 7:42 for Salve Regina's largest lead of the game (59-38). Eight different Seahawks had three or more points in the second half, led by Declan Walmsley and Sean Seymour who both scored seven points. Clay Brochu grabbed eight caroms with six off the defensive glass. Springfield pressured Salve Regina into 11 turnovers and converted them into 11 points. Salve Regina had a 9-0 run culminating with a pair of free throws from Brady Spencer. After going 3-for-3 from the line in the first half, the Pride misfired eight times in 22 attempts from the charity stripe in the second half. | Seahawks 73, Pride 57 

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Declan Walmsley led all players with 16 points on 5-of-10 from the floor including four 3-pointers.
  • Clay Brochu had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Joseph Hoch led Springfield with 16 points while making 6-of-8 field goals including three 3-pointers and 1-for-1 at the line.
  •  Five different Seahawks made a shot from long range -- Declan Walmsley (4), Will Parisi (2), Clay Brochu, Brady Spencer, Sean Seymour.
  • Salve Regina had the edge on the boards, 42 to 37.
  • The Seahawks had season highs in free throws made (18) and attempted (26).
