Seahawks get fourth straight win in nine days
BOSTON, Mass. - Senior Mikey Spencer (Abington, Mass.) scored a game-high 20 points to pace the Salve Regina University men's basketball team to a 69-56 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Tuesday night.
Winners of four straight, the Seahawks improve to 13-4 overall and 8-2 CCC play while the Leopards sit at 5-10 overall and 2-7 at the midway point of their conference schedule.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After the teams traded baskets to open the contest, Spencer hit a three, giving the visitors a 5-2 lead 1:39 into the contest. From there, Wentworth used a 10-2 run, taking a 12-7 lead on a junior Sam Swift (Arlington, Mass.) three pointer. During the run, Swift had a pair of threes.
- The Leopards had a 16-11 lead with 16:11 left after a layup from freshman Jack Connell (Walpole, Mass.) but the Seahawks answered with a 9-4 run and grabbed a 20-16 lead after a layup from graduate student Cameron Collins (Montville, Conn.) with 7:31 left.
- Senior Kyle Henseler (Coventry, R.I.) trimmed the lead to two with a jumper, 41 seconds later but Salve Regina answered with a 9-0 run, taking a 29-18 lead with 3:28 left after senior Andrew Richards (Rosedale, N.Y.) created a turnover and fed graduate student Kevin Kelly (Valhalla, N.Y.) in transition. Salve Regina, which shot 57.7 percent in the first half, had a 35-25 lead at the break.
- Using a 14-5 run to open the second half, the Seahawks took a 49-30 lead after a Spencer three with just under 15 minutes to play. A transition layup from sophomore Clay Brochu (North Kingstown, R.I.) gave the visitors their largest lead of the night (53-32) with 13:12 left, however Wentworth used an 8-0 run to trim the lead to eight, with freshman Tyler Stewart (East Taunton, Mass.) scoring the final six points of the run.
- Kelly answered with a layup to start an 8-2 run and push the lead back to 19 with 6:44 left in the contest. The Seahawks matched their largest lead of the night three times before the Black & Gold closed out the game on a 10-2 run.
- Brochu added 16 points and four assists for Salve Regina while senior Chris Peasley (Plainfield, Conn.) finished with 12 points, five rebounds, and three blocks.
- Stewart connected on 6-of-8 shots from the floor and finished with a team and career-high 18 points to go along with 11 rebounds for his first collegiate double-double. Junior Sam Swift (Arlington, Mass.) added nine. Wentworth had a 42-31 rebounding advantage in the contest.
SERIES NOTES:
- Tonight was the 68th all-time meeting between the two teams. Salve Regina leads, 35-34.
