NEWPORT, R.I. - For the first time in many years, John Kavanagh '95 and Matt Coute '06 missed the annual Salve Regina University alumni basketball game (February 2, 2013). And it wasn't because the ground hog saw its shadow.

Both former basketball players are now head coaches for high school basketball programs. Kavanagh led the Classical High School boys' team to a Rhode Island state championship while Coute took his Bishop Connolly program to a Massachusetts state title earlier this month.

Kavanagh's title came in his third year as head coach and marked the fourth championship in school history for Classical. Coute's came in his second season at the helm and was the first state title for Bishop Connolly.
