Seahawks second-half surge propels them past Colby-Sawyer, 83-78

NEW LONDON, N.H. - Jabreche Boyd (West Haven, Conn.) scored a game-high 27 points to lead Salve Regina past Colby-Sawyer, 83-78 on Saturday afternoon in The Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Seahawks move to 3-6 in the conference and 4-17 overall, while the Chargers drop to 11-10 overall and 4-5 in TCCC action.

 

The first half was hotly contested and featured nine ties and nine lead changes. Colby-Sawyer did most of its damage in the paint and received 14 points off the bench, while the hot shooting of the Seahawks gave them a 40-39 halftime advantage. Salve Regina shot 50% from the floor and the three-point line, knocking down 6 of 12 from beyond the arc.

 

The Seahawks opened the second half strong and held on to their lead in the first five minutes. However, the Chargers began a 14-0 run over the next five minutes to build a lead of 12 over Salve Regina. Boyd responded with eight straight points for the Seahawks. Later in the half, Salve used a 7-1 run to tie the game at 67. With less than two and a half minutes to play, the Seahawks sealed the victory with a couple of layups, several free throws and a defensive stand.

 

Boyd received help from junior Dan Royce (Mahwah, N.J.) who had 22 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Trey Scales (Boston, Mass.) contributed 18 points and eight rebounds. Although junior Ryan Birrell (Hope, R.I.) didn't get into the scoring column, he dished out a game-high 10 assists.

 

The Chargers were led by senior Jon Chaloux's (Barre, Vt.) double-double. He scored 20 points and grabbed 10 boards. Freshman Jason Chevrefils (Manchester, N.H.) chipped in 16 points on 7-13 shooting. Senior Chris Cox (Barre, Vt.) and Corey Willis (Easton, Mass.) were the other Chargers to hit double-figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

 

The Chargers host Gordon College, who is unbeaten in the TCCC, on Tuesday at 7:30pm. Salve Regina travels to Curry on Tuesday for an 8:00pm tip against the Colonels.
