Seahawks end season with loss at Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. - Gordon celebrated its five seniors in fine fashion, cruising past visiting Salve Regina 89-62. The men finish the regular season with a 21-4 record, having won 17 of their last 18 games.

The Scots' 12-1 conference record has earned them first place in The Commonwealth Coast Conference, and they will host a quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday, February 23, at 7PM against a opponent yet to be determined.

Before the game, Gordon honored its five seniors, Aaron Trigg (Blue Valley, Kan.), Brady Bajema (Whitinsville, Mass.), Ben Gaskill (Columbus, Ohio), Jeff Derr (Barrington, Ill.), and Tim MacDonnell (Jericho, Vt.).  The five players formed the Gordon starting lineup for the first time this season. After getting off to a slow start, the Scots went on a 17-0 run midway through the first half, turning a 16-14 deficit into a 31-16 lead.  The Scots took a 38-26 lead into the break, overcoming hot shooting by Seahawks' guard Jabreche Boyd, with dominant inside play from Derr, Gaskill, Greg Walker, and David Dempsey.

Salve Regina battled to within 42-37 early in the second half before Gordon took total control, running out to a huge second half lead, and scoring 51 points in the second stanza.  The 89 point offensive output was the highest Gordon total in a conference game this season, and the most since Gordon scored 95 in a November 24, 2009 win over Salem State.

The Scots put 5 scorers in double figures led by Derr with 17, as he enjoyed one of the highest scoring games of his career. Aaron Trigg added 15 points, and Gaskill posted 13, while Greg Walker and David Dempsey came off the bench to score 12 points apiece. Gordon shot 50% in both halfs, and had a 46-30 rebounding advantage, led by Walker's 11. Salve Regina was held to just 36% shooting. Ryan Birrell joined Boyd as one of two players in double figures with 14.

Salve Regina finishes their season at 4-21, with a 3-10 conference record.

Gordon will await their quarterfinal matchup. As the conference's top seed, Gordon has potential semifinal and finals matchups on Thursday and Saturday. All games will be held at the Bennett Center in Wenham, Mass.
