Boyd scores 26 to lead Salve Regina over Nichols, 84-70

NEWPORT, R.I. - Graduate student Jabreche Boyd [West Haven, Conn.] sank a career-high seven 3-pointers and finished with 26 points to lead Salve Regina University men's basketball to a 84-70 win over Nichols College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference action at the Rodgers Recreation Center.

 

Salve Regina finished with its second-highest scoring output on the season for its second win of the season. Boyd, who had 13 at the half, was perfect from the floor in the second frame with all four shots coming from behind the arc. The Seahawks had a season-high 13 3-pointers in the victory.

 

With the score tied at 41-41 in the second half, two 3-pointers from Boyd and another from junior guard Ryan Birrell [Hope, R.I.] were added to a layup from sophomore forward Austin Hall [Coventry, Conn.] for a double-digit Seahawk advantage. After a tip-in by Bison freshman forward Kyle Mascilak [Sparta, N.J.], Boyd hit another trey and Salve Regina maintained a double-digit lead the remainder of the game.

 

Four other Seahawks scored in double figures including junior forward Dan Royce [Mahwah, N.J.] who finished with a double-double (16 points, 11 rebounds). Andrew Knight [Danvers, Mass.] and Trey Scales [Boston, Mass.] contributed 13 points apiece while Birrell finished with 11 points.

 

Sophomore forward Pete Atkins [Gainesville, Fla.] led Nichols with 13 points which included a team-best three 3-pointers. Bryan Riley [West Boylston, Mass.] and Ryan Wilcox [West Granby, Conn.] both added 10 points in the setback.

 

Salve Regina (2-13; 1-3 TCCC) hosts Western New England College on Saturday (3 p.m.) in a twinbill that precedes its fourth induction ceremonies for its Athletic Hall of Fame (5:30 p.m. at Ochre Court). Nichols (8-7; 1-3 TCCC) travels to Colby-Sawyer for a conference doubleheader on Saturday.
