Middletown, R.I. – Gaudet Field
Saturday, September 24, 2016

Summary
The Salve Regina University field hockey team suffered its second straight loss after falling to the University of New England by a score of 3-0 at Gaudet Field Saturday evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.

Series and Streaks
This was the 21st meeting between Salve Regina and the University of New England. The Nor'easters now hold a 15-6 advantage in the all-time series and have won the last two meetings.

Three Stars of the Game
1 – UNE junior Vonde Saunders (Center Conway, N.H.) - scored what turned out to be the game winning goal in the first half.
2 – SRU junior Jessie Severino (Branford, Conn.) - made 21 saves on 24 shots on goal.
3 – UNE senior Nicole Matarozzo (Wolfeboro, N.H.) - scored the second goal for the Nor'easters and led the team in shot (8) and shots on goal (6).

Key Stat of the Game
The Nor'easters outshot the Seahawks 32-4 and 24-1 in shots on goal.

Turning Point
The Seahawks were held shotless in the first half while allowing 15 shots, 12 on goal, and nine corners, but trailed just 1-0. Severino was keeping the Seahawks in the game with her saves and as long as it remained a one score game things could turn in an instant despite the fact the UNE was controlling the game. After three straight corners, and three saves from Severino the Nor'easters finally broke through again at 49:32 when Nicole Matarozzo rifled a shot past Severino from the low slot to give the Nor'easters a 2-0 lead.

Quick Hits

  • The Nor'easters held a 14-2 edge in corners, 5-0 in the second half.
  • Holly Smith (Peabody, Mass.) had a quiet day in the cage for the Nor'easters, picking up the win while stopping the lone shot on net that she faced.
