Seahawks skill (not luck) 13 goals in season-opening win

NEWTON, Mass. – The Mount Ida College field hockey team opened their second varsity season on Tuesday afternoon and fell 13-0 to visiting Salve Regina University in non-conference action Alumni Field.

Sophomore goalie Emily McConnell (Lowell, Mass.) made 11 saves, but Mount Ida could not manage a shot on goal and saw the visitors notch 35 attempts and take a 7-0 lead in the half.

Senior Marissa Gagnon (Smithfield, R.I.) led the way for the visitors with four goals and an assist, while Julia Grover (Cotuit, Mass.) scored the opening goal of the game 4:25 in, adding her second of the game just four and half minutes later, on the other side of a Gagnon marker.

Senior Abigail Tepper (Foxboro, Mass.) also twice, while five different players netted their first goals of the season for Salve Regina.

Erin Gendreau (Sandwich, Mass.) gave the visitors a 6-0 lead at the 14:00 mark, and Tepper capped the first half scoring at the half hour mark with her second of the game.

Gagnon netted twice to start the second half before Hope Vaughn (Granby, Conn.), Lindsey Venuto (Foxboro, Mass.), Brianna LoCascio (Bayport, N.Y.) and Sarah Thompson (Clinton, Conn.) capping the scoring binge, the final goal coming on the 25th and final penalty corner of the game for the Seahawks with no time left in the second half.

Sophomore goalie Jessie Severino (Branford, Conn.) shut out Mount Ida for the first 54:57 of play, giving way to freshman Allison Daly (Peabody, Mass.), who played a clean 15 minutes in her collegiate debut.

Mount Ida did not earn a penalty corner in the run of play and fell to 0-1 on the season. They will try to rebound on Thursday when they host Nichols at 4:00 pm at Alumni Field.

Salve Regina (1-0) will celebrate their home opener on Thursday when they host UMass Dartmouth at 5 pm.
