WENHAM, Mass. - Despite scoring both the first and last goal of the contest, the Salve Regina University field hockey team fell to Gordon College, 3-2, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest at a rainy Brigham Athletic Complex. The win improves the Scots to 4-9 overall, 2-3 in the CCC while the loss drops Salve Regina to 7-5 overall, 2-3 in conference.

Salve wasted little time getting on the board as Lisa Bucci (Irvington, N.Y.) finished a corner from Alexandria Rizzo (Hopedale, Mass.) just two and a half minutes into the game to give the Seahawks the 1-0 lead. Despite firing nine shots over the course of the half, the Scots were unable to get the equalizer as Salve Regina's Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) made seven stops in net to keep her team up by one at the half.

That lead was short-lived, however, as Katherine Bailey (Baltimore, Md.) netted her first of two tallies less than one minute into the second frame, finishing a feed from Karli Balmer (Perkasie, Pa.)  to even the game at 1-1. Then in the 51st minute, Melanie Landis (Quakertown, Pa.) gave the Scots their first lead of the day after collecting a pass from Balmer off a corner and ripping a shot from 15 yards past McCann for the 2-1 advantage.

Exactly six minutes later, that lead widened when Collette Newcombe (Rowley, Mass.)  carried the ball down the right side and slotted a pass to the waiting stick of Bailey, who tucked her shot inside the far post for the two-goal lead.

Salve's Heather Kapatoes (Hopedale, Mass.) cinched the gap back to one in the 64th minute with her fifth goal of the season off a Lindsey Mazzola (Upton, Mass.) assist, but that was as close as the Seahawks would get as the Gordon defense tightened down the stretch to secure the win.

Keeper Anna Bury (Huntingtown, Md.) earned the win in the cage for Gordon with eight saves, while McCann turned away nine in the losing effort.

The Scots take a break from conference action to face Rivier tomorrow at 7 p.m. Salve will host Nichols in a CCC showdown on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 5 p.m.
