Gulls down Seahawks, 6-1

Beverly, Mass. - The Endicott field hockey team tallied three goals in each half - including a pair from Hannah Thornberg (Oakland, Maine) - to earn a 6-1 The Commonwealth Coast Conference win over visiting Salve Regina on Homecoming Weekend. The Gulls move to 7-4 overall (2-1 TCCC) with the win while the Seahawks stall at 1-10 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

Thornberg opened the scoring in the 15th minute after junior forward Alexandra Parese (Wilton, Conn.) found the sophomore open in front of the net. Less than two minutes later the Gulls struck again. Thornberg scooped up a loose ball in the circle and hit sophomore forward Taylor Matties (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), who didn't miss from close range.

With one minute remaining in the half, the Gulls converted a penalty corner to go into halftime with a 3-0 lead. Joanne Reid (Clarksville, Md.) received the corner and moved past a defender at the top of the circle. She put a hard shot on goal that Stacie Teevens (Westborough, Mass.) deflected past the keeper for her second goal of the year.

Reid put the Blue and Green on top by four just 57 seconds into the second frame. The junior midfielder received a rebound near the top of the circle, beat a defender, and fired a hard shot that found the goal.

Salve Regina trimmed the lead to three in the 44th minute. Heather Kapatoes (Hopedale, Mass.) took a pass from Brittany Lopes (Lexington, Mass.) and converted from the left side of the goal.

Endicott answered three minutes later when Parese and Thornberg hooked up for the second time. Senior midfielder Allison Forgues (Auburn, Maine) put the finishing touches on the afternoon with a late goal. Caitlin Keating (York, Maine) recorded the assist on the play, giving the Gulls a convincing 6-1 conference win.

Taylor Teixeira (Exeter, N.H.) made five stops between the pipes for Endicott. Salve Regina's Natalie Balletta (Leominster, Mass.) made ten stops for the visitors.

Endicott returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts the University of New England at 4:00 pm. Salve Regina travels to Regis on the same day for a 3:30 pm start.
