Garrett DeForest - NEWMAC Special Teams Player of the Week // Oct. 30 - Nov. 5

Garrett DeForest - NEWMAC Special Teams Player of the Week (10/30 - 11/5/2023)

WESTWOOD, Mass. - The NEWMAC has announced its Athlete of the Week honorees for the week ending November 5, 2023, and Salve Regina University senior defensive back Garrett DeForest (Whately, Mass.) has been selected as the Special Teams Player of the Week for football.

DeForest stood out on special teams with a blocked punt and then a scoop and score for the first of four Salve Regina touchdowns in the second quarter as the Seahawks built a 49-0 advantage over the Privateers by halftime. DeForest nearly had a second blocked punt later in the quarter as his pressure forced a rushed kick out of bounds after seven yards. The Seahawks took over at the Maritime 30-yard line with less than two minutes in the half before Salve Regina went in for its final score.

"One of the big components for special teams is effort- and proof that Garrett brings the effort day in and day out is that he is on four (4) special teams units," says Seahawk 11th-year head coach Kevin Gilmartin. "And to see him make a great play because of his effort to the punter, and then have the patience and poise and step back and scoop the football up and then turn to get into the endzone was a true joy for the entire team."

The Seahawks (7-2, 5-1 NEWMAC) also honored DeForest and his senior teammates in their final regular-season home game - (22) Joshua Adams, Francisco Aguero, Avery Arno, Sam Capodice, Garrett DeForest, Jacob Dubois, Griffin Gallati, Matt Heverin, Ryan Janz, Drew Keiran, Matthew Lavoie, Zachary Ludemann, Luke Maruca, Michael Morin, Sean Pampin, Jack Patalano, Jacob Perez, Joe Saccone, Jeff Seganos Jr., Cain Smith, Christopher Tall, Jack Zingaro.

Salve Regina concludes its regular season on the road against NEWMAC foe Norwich University on Saturday, November 11, at noon.
