Shane Lange named NEFC Defensive Player of the Week

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Salve Regina University junior defensive end Shane Lange (Branford, Mass.) was named the New England Football Conference (NEFC) Defensive Player of the Week. He shares the honor with Darren Furr of UMass Dartmouth.

Lange was a key component of a Seahawks defense that held Curry College to 178 total yards of offense and forced eight turnovers (five fumbles, three interceptions) in a 31-7 win - their first over the Colonels since 2002. Despite being double-teamed for much of the contest, Lange had five tackles (four solo), four quarterback hurries, and forced and recovered a fumble. He leads the conference with 8.5 sacks.

Sophomore running back Trey Scales (Boston, Mass.), meanwhile, broke off touchdown runs of 16 and 22 yards in the win and was selected to the Honor Roll. He leads the team with five touchdowns.

Earlier this season, Lange was selected to the honor roll after returning an interception 35 yards for a touchdown against Endicott on Sept.25. Scales (right), meanwhile, is a first-time NEFC honoree and the fifth different Seahawk in 2010, joining Lange, senior Nick Jentz (Little Ferry, N.J.), junior A.J. Albert (Franklin Park, N.J.), and sophomore Brendan Deasy (Quincy, Mass.).

The Seahawks (3-4, 2-2 NEFC) return to action on Saturday when they travel to MIT for a 5 p.m. contest on Saturday.
