NEW LONDON, Conn. (Saturday, April 6, 2024) - The #5/6 Salve Regina University baseball team suffered its first-ever NEWMAC loss, 3-1 in the opener of a twinbill at the United States Coast Guard Academy, but rebounded for a 6-5 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, all the runs were scored in the first inning before 15 zeroes followed in the remaining frames. Tyler Cannoe (Schenectady, N.Y.) crossed the plate when Matt D'Amato (Midland Park, N.J.) induced the Bears' Vito Giordano into a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt. In the bottom of the frame, Seahawk starter Sean Mulligan (Verona, N.J.) had three Ks in the ledger but the third reached base on a passed ball. The next batter, Richard Barkley, homered to right field.

Coast Guard (12-6, 3-1 NEWMAC) took a 1-0 lead into the fourth of game two before Cannoe's sacrifice fly tied the game and then Hunter Yaworski's (Brooklyn, Conn) homer to right center plated D'Amato and Evan O'Rourke (Arlington, Mass.) for a three-run lSeahawk advantage. Christian Homa (Fairfield, Conn.) and Yaworski added RBI singles in the ninth and three Seahawk pitchers worked the final three outs with Andrew Wertz (Dover, N.H.) earning his first save, getting the last Bear on a foul pop to catcher Shea Donovan (Milton, Mass.) with the bases loaded.
