Summary
KINGSTON, R.I. - Tyler Cannoe (Schenectady, N.Y.) had a game-high three hits, two runs scored, and an RBI courtesy of a solo homer while senior pitcher Andrew Roman (Monson, Mass.) recorded the final four outs, two by strikeout in a 7-4 victory for the Salve Regina University baseball team in Game 2 of a split with visiting New England College in non-conference action Sunday.

Series and Streaks
This was the first meeting between Salve Regina and New England College since the teams met on March 11, 2020, in what proved to be the final athletic competition for the Seahawks before the season was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Seahawks now own a 43-4 record all-time versus the Pilgrims.

Turning Points
In Game 1 the Pilgrims and Seahawks were tied 1-1 despite the Pilgrims being hitless. That changed in the top of the seventh as JD Normand (Auburn, N.H.) hit an RBI single to give the Pilgrims the lead with two outs, then Harutaro Takahashi (Tokyo, Japan) delivered another single to score Normand and give the visitors a 3-1 lead. Salve Regina would tack on one more run and load the bases threatening to walk-off with the win only to strand all three runners with a ground-out.

In Game 2 the Seahawks led comfortably for most of the game, but in the top of the seventh the Pilgrims threatened to take the lead after drawing within one, 5-4, with the bases loaded. Roman, who came on in relief of starter Patrick Maybach (Saunderstown, R.I.) had a pitch skip to the backstop, but it bounded perfectly back to catcher Dylan Ketch (Clinton, Conn.) who wisely fired down to second as the base runners had already began to run and picked off Ryan Hughes (Northwood, N.H.) to end the inning and strand all three runners. Cannoe's homer the next inning followed by a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch gave the Seahawks a 7-3 edge, enough for Roman to bring home in the eighth before the game was called due to darkness.

Quick Hits

  • Shaun Cormier (Rochester, N.Y.) struck out six to pick up the win in Game 1 for the Pilgrims to improve to 1-0 while Tim Krol (East Longmeadow, Mass.) earned his first save of the season.
  • Brayden Clark (Beverly, Mass.) struck out nine, allowing just one run, for the Seahawks in Game 1, while Jack Wells takes the loss in relief allowing two runs on two hits with a strikeout.
  • Patrick Maybach grabbed the win in Game 2 for Salve Regina going 6.2 innings with eight strikeouts before Roman closed things out going an inning and a third to pick up the save.
  • Alex Perez (Leominster, Mass.) suffers the loss in Game 2 after 6.0 innings of work allowing five runs with three strikeouts.
