CCC BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – With two wins on the final day of the regular season, Salve Regina locked up the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Regular-Season Championship and earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming CCC Baseball Championship Tournament. The Seahawks finished with a 12-4 CCC record (23-13 overall).

The Seahawks will be looking for their third straight CCC Tournament title when the postseason gets underway this weekend.

Due to the regular season being extended because of rainouts, the tournament format has been adjusted from the originally published format. The first stage of the tournament will now take place over two days with a third day used if necessary.

The tournament will begin on Saturday, May 5 with top-seeded Seahawks and No. 2 seed Roger Williams each hosting a neutral-site games at noon. Salve will host No. 4 seed Endicott and No. 5 seed Wentworth, while Roger Williams will host No. 3 seed Western New England and No. 6 seed Gordon. The winners of the noon games will then play the hosts later that afternoon.

The Hawks earned the No. 2 seed with an 11-5 conference record (19-19 overall). WNE also went 11-5 in league play (26-12 overall), but lost both head-to-head contests with Roger Williams and was given the lower seed based on the conference tiebreaking procedure. The Gulls' 10-6 CCC record (24-14 overall) landed them the No. 4 spot in the seeding, while Wentworth and Gordon filled the last two tournament spots. The Leopards and Fighting Scots both had 8-8 conference records and split their head-to-head series. Wentworth was awarded the higher seed when the teams' results against other conference opponents were compared in rank order. Wentworth earned a win against No. 1 seed Salve Regina and thus was granted the No. 5 seed.

On day two of the tournament, Sunday, May 6, the teams will return to their Saturday sites with the two losers from each pod facing off at noon in elimination games. The winners of the early games will then play their respective pod's undefeated team. If an undefeated team loses, the teams will play an elimination game on Monday, May 7 at the home of the higher seed.

The two pod winners will continue on to the best-of-three CCC Championship Series, which is scheduled to take place on Friday-Saturday, May 11-12 at the higher seed. One game will be played on Friday with the second game and "if necessary" game scheduled for Saturday. While all games will be played at the higher seed's home field, the lower seed will be the "home" team in the first game on Saturday and bat second.

The winner of the CCC Championship Series will be named the CCC Tournament Champion and will earn the league's automatic qualifier into the 2018 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship Tournament.
