Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - Visiting Western New England University got complete game efforts from its starting pitchers to earn a two-game sweep of the Salve Regina University baseball team in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

  1. Western New England junior Paul Wetmore (Hamden, Mass.) pitched a complete game shutout and struck out nine batters to improve to 4-1 on the season.
  2. Western New England junior Bob Hamel (Southwick, Mass.) pitched a complete game, striking out four while allowing two runs on six hits to improve to 1-0 on the season.
  3. Western New England senior Jared Rosenblatt (Avon. Conn.) drove in five runs between the two games.

Salve Regina pitching held the Gulls to two runs on five hits for the day.

Turning Points
In game one the Golden Bears led 5-2 in the top of seventh before they scoring 11 runs on just three hits in the inning. Seahawk pitchers hit five batsmen and walked four more in the frame.

In game two the Golden Bears jumped out to a 1-0 lead like they had in game one, but this time were able to hold the Seahawks at bay thanks to starting pitcher Paul Wetmore. It remained a 1-0 game into the third inning when Erik Lacaire (Worcester, Mass.) looped a double into right field, scoring two runs. After a fly-out a wild pitch advanced Lacaire to third base where Rosenblatt drove him home for his fifth RBI of the afternoon.
