Seahawks split doubleheader with Pilgrims

HENNIKER, N.H. - The New England College baseball team split a conference double-header against Salve Regina Monday afternoon. The he Seahawks posted a 3-1 in game one while the Pilgrims captured game two, 5-2.

 

With the split, the Pilgrims move to 8-19 overall and 4-13 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC). The Seahawks are now 18-16 overall and 12-6 in the TCCC.

 

In game one, Salve Regina's Charles Matarazzo (Montville, N.J.) picked up the complete game victory on the mound. He allowed one run on six hits while striking out three.

 

The Seahawks wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in game one. Nicholas Politelli (Warwick, R.I.) opened the home half of the first inning with a double to left field and came around to score on a double by Matt Capone (E. Providence, R.I.).

 

Salve Regina tacked on another run in the third inning as Anthony Conte (Georgetown, Mass.) opened the inning with a double and came around to score on a single off the bat of Alexander Melcher (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.). NEC sliced the Salve Regina lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Kevin Caputo (Dighton, Mass.).

 

The Seahawks got the run back in the home half of the fourth as Brendan Tapley (Narragansett, R.I.) belted a solo home run over the left field fence. The Pilgrims loaded the bases in the sixth inning, but the Seahawks induced an inning ending double-play to extinguish the threat.

 

Salve Regina's Capone and Conte each finished game on with two hits. NEC's Lucas Burgess had two hits and Pierce Byrd (Ft, Myers, Fla.) doubled for the Pilgrims.

 

In game two NEC's Adam Climo (Southport, Maine) picked up the win on the mound for the Pilgrims. He pitched four innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Junior Tyler Perrin (Thetford, Vt.) earned the save as he shut down the Seahawks in the final three innings.

 

NEC plated an unearned run in the first inning when Jimmy Lauzon (Manchester, N.H.) reached on an error and came around to score on a Brandon Adorno (Ft. Myers, Fla.) sacrifice fly.

 

Salve Regina responded with two unearned runs in the bottom half of the first inning, including a run scoring single by Capone.

 

NEC took the 3-2 lead in the third inning. Adorno followed a single by PJ Crowley (Pawcatuck, Conn.) with a home run over the right field fence. The Pilgrims tacked on two insurance runs in the fifth inning as Gerry Allen (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) reached on a leadoff walk and came around to score on a single by Scott Fortune (Shruboak, N.Y.).

 

Crowley, Kevin Caputo and Scott Fortune who each had two hits in the contest while Capone finished with three hits and a run scored.
