Pat Quinn pitches Seahawks to first win of season

VERO BEACH, Fla. - Freshman infielder Anthony Conte (Georgetown, Mass.) picked up his first collegiate RBI after getting plunked by an 0-2 pitch with the bases loaded as Salve Regina University baseball (2-1) completed a sweep of Muhlenberg University (2-9-1) with a 10-9 come-from-behind victory in Game 2.Pat Quinn - complete-game victory

Salve Regina senior Pat Quinn (Middletown, N.J.) pitched a complete game in the first meeting between the two schools as the Seahawks beat the Mules, 6-3. Quinn had been staked to a 1-0 lead as Devin Flynn (Auburn, Maine) stroked an opposite field RBI single in his first at-bat of 2011 in 1st inning of Game 1.

Charles Matarazzo (Montville, N.J.) had an RBI single in the 2nd while Byron Reding (Darien, Conn.) and Brendan Tapley (Narragansett, R.I.) each had RBI singles in the 3rd for a 5-0 cushion. Quinn did not relax on the comfortable lead as he set the Mules down in order in the bottom of the 3rd.

Muhlenberg got two runs back in its 4th inning with a leadoff single from Brian Beck (Metuchen, N.J.) followed by a double from John Scuderi (Old Brookville, N.Y.). Scuderi scored when the relay throw got away from Tapley while the catcher was attempting to block the plate.

Senior infielder Tom Glynn (Woodbridge, Conn.) added an insurance run in the Seahawk 5th with a leadoff double down the left-field line. He later scored on a Mule throwing error.

After giving up two runs to the Mules in the first inning of Game 2, Matarazzo settled down to pitch into the top of the 7th inning. His mates plated runs in the first inning for the third straight game, and took a 5-2 lead into the 4th.

Max Litvak (Florham, N.J.) led off the 4th frame with a single up the middle for Muhlenberg, but was erased on an inning-ending double play induced by Matarazzo.

Glynn, who collected four hits in the twinbill sweep, got the 3-run rally in the bottom of the 7th started with a one-out walk. Michael O'Neill (Pawtucket, R.I.) got the only Seahawk basehit in the inning when he beat out a grounder to short. With two outs, Quinn earned a walk to load the bases. Reding was then hit by a pitch to pull the Seahawks within one (9-8).

Freshman outfielder Nicholas Dell'Anno (Reading, Mass.) earned a free pass to tie the score before Conte's game-winning RBI.

Salve Regina returns to the Vero Beach Sports Village on Sunday for a twinbill with Richard Stockton (1 p.m.).
