Becker beats Salve Regina, 10-5

NEWPORT, R.I. - Sophomore infielder Austin Phillips (Thomson, Ga.) collected three hits, two RBI, and two runs scored to lead visiting Becker College to a 10-5 victory over Salve Regina University baseball in non-league action at Reynolds Field today.

 

Phillips led off the 2nd with a single to center field off Seahawk starter Thomas Betros (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.). Todd Tompkins (West Haven, Conn.), who also collected three hits, had a one-out single to send Phillips to third base. Mike Marcello (West Haven, Conn.) drove in the game's first run with a single to left field.

 

Salve Regina (4-9) got a run back in its 3rd inning on an RBI single from senior Alex Melcher (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.). Catcher Dominic Di Sano (Central Falls, R.I.) beat out an infield single in the 4th inning to deliver the Seahawks' second run in Matt Capone (Barrington, R.I.).

 

Becker (6-4) added four runs to its lead in the 5th inning. Keith Kandel (Fresno, Calif.) and Weston Meehan (Thomson, Ga.) both doubled before Phillips delivered a two-run single.

 

Trailing by eight (10-2) with two outs in the 9th, Salve Regina mounted a mini-comeback with a three-run rally on two hits. Jason Sluberski (Verona, N.J.) finished 2-for-2 with a pair of opposite field singles. Nicholas Dell'Anno (Reading, Mass.) also added two hits for the Seahawks who fell for the fourth straight game.

 

Freshman starter Jason Silbor (Uxbridge, Mass.) improved his record to 2-1 with seven innings of work. The Hawks return to action at Massachusetts Maritime on Thursday.

 

Salve Regina hits the road for a single-game against Brandeis on Thursday.
