Quinn's one-hitter propels Seahawks to sweep of CSC

WENHAM, Mass. - The Salve Regina baseball team received two complete games from its pitching staff to lead the Seahawks to a doubleheader sweep of Colby-Sawyer. The Seahawks took game one 2-0 and won game two 13-1.

Game one of the doubleheader was a pitchers' duel as neither team could muster much offense. After each team went three up and three down in the first inning, the Seahawks took advantage of an error and then an RBI single by sophomore Devin Flynn (Auburn, Maine) in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Salve Regina senior hurler Patrick Quinn (Middletown, N.J.) was perfect through 3 1/3 inning before freshman Andy Lapple (Newtown, Conn.) reached on an error from the first baseman. Quinn recovered from the error and retired the next two batters to get out of the inning.

Junior Justin Martin (Lebanon, N.H.) broke up Quinn's no-hit bid with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. The Chargers' next batter walked, but then Quinn got a strikeout to end the threat. Quinn recorded three of his seven strikeouts in the final two innings en route to the complete game one hitter.

Salve Regina got an insurance run off of Colby-Sawyer freshman pitcher Kevin Keith (Quincy, Mass.) when senior Charles Matarazzo (Montville, N.J.) belted a solo homerun over the left field fence. Keith went the distance for the Chargers and surrendered one earned run and struck out five.

The Seahawks' bats exploded in game two en route to the 13-1 victory. Salve Regina began the top of the first with five runs on a pair of errors, three doubles and a single. Five different players recorded an RBI in the frame.

Junior Byron Reding (Darien, Conn.) extended Salve Regina's lead in the second with a two-run single. The Seahawks poured it on in the top of the third scoring four more runs to take a 12-0 lead.

Matarazzo threw a complete game for the Seahawks and recorded eight strikeouts. He also helped himself as he went 2-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Quinn, who was game one's winning pitcher, went 2-for-4 at the plate in game two.

Senior Mike Bertuccio (Millstone Township, N.J.) suffered the loss for Colby-Sawyer. Sophomore Sean Gavin (Keene, N.H.) led the Chargers with a pair of hits.

The Seahawks will host Roger Williams on Sunday at 2 p.m., while Colby-Sawyer has a doubleheader scheduled with Anna Maria at Worcester Academy on Sunday at noon.
