Salve Regina salvages split with Gordon

NEWPORT, R.I. - Sophomore right-hander Robert Hinckley [Raynham, Mass.] scattered nine hits and struck out five in six innings to lead visiting Gordon College to a 4-1 win over Salve Regina University in the opener of a The Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader in Newport. The Seahawks responded with a five-run 2nd inning in Game Two and held on for a 5-3 win and a split.

Gordon finishes 9-13 in league play and in a four-way tie for the final three playoff positions; meanwhile, Salve Regina already knew it would be seeded No. 5 and play against No. 4 Wentworth in the conference tournament next Tuesday (site to be determined).

Junior infielder Stephen Myhren [Vernon, N.J.] had an RBI groundout to produce the game's first run in the opener for Gordon. Nick Politelli [Warwick, R.I.] and Matt Capone [Barrington, R.I.] opened the Seahawk 5th frame with a single and double, respectively. Politelli tied the score on a double-play groundout.

Sophomore catcher Chris Moran [Williamsville, N.Y.] contributed an RBI double in the Gordon 6th inning. A pair of bases-loaded walks contributed to the third and fourth runs for the Scots.

Freshman John Kanas [East Moriches, N.Y.] pitched a 1-2-3 7th inning on three groundouts to record his first collegiate save.

Jason Sluberski [Verona, N.J.], Charles Matarazzo [Montville, N.J.], Capone, and Alex Melcher [Poughkeepsie, N.Y.] each batted in runs during the Seahawk 2nd-inning outburst in Game Two. Salve Regina (21-16; 12-10 TCCC) used 11 pitchers combined in the twinbill split.
