Haddad hurls 14 innings in twinbill postseason sweep
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (Sunday, May 4, 2003) -- Salve Regina University sophomore Chris Haddad [Danbury, Connecticut] pitched the Seahawks to two victories over visiting Roger Williams to eliminate the Hawks from the Commonwealth Coast Conference baseball tournament and advance the Seahawks to the championship game on Monday.
Haddad pitched a complete game in a 12-5 decision which started at 10:00 a.m. Feeling fresh, he asked and received the starting nod in Game Two as the Seahawks posted an 11-5 win.
Haddad had three hits in the first game as did junior teammate Kevin Linskey [Seal Beach, California]. OF Damian Costantino [Warwick, Rhode Island] hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Linskey homered to lead off the Seahawk sixth.
In Game Two, Haddad pitched five innings allowing just two runs and exited with an 11-2 advantage. He had two more hits while Costantino hit another towering homer to centerfield. INF Eric Cirella [Jamestown, Rhode Island] joined the home run parade with a round-tripper to right field. Cirella's shot was a three-run blast in the fifth.
Senior Jeff Fucarile [Chelmsford, Massachusetts] pitched four innings in relief to earn his first save of the season. Top-seeded Salve Regina (21-8) hosts #2/Endicott College who also advanced from the losers' bracket to sweep Colby-Sawyer today. Championship game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at Cardines Field in Newport, Rhode Island.
This is the third straight season Salve Regina has advanced to the conference tournament final game, winning over Endicott in 2001 and falling to Roger Williams a year ago. Endicott gave the Seahawks their only conference regular season loss, 9-4, two weeks ago.
