Four more to join Hall of Fame

NEWPORT, R.I. - In conjunction with the alumni and athletics departments, Salve Regina University will induct four more individuals in its Athletic Hall of Fame during Fall Festival Weekend ceremonies on October 3. The ninth hall of fame class will be recognized throughout the day during the university's Fall Festival Weekend with five different sports teams hosting events in addition to the 16th annual Mansion Run. The induction ceremony takes place at Ochre Court on the Newport campus.

The four individuals being inducted include basketball player Tracy Giroux Harpin '90 (Marlboro, Mass.), ice hockey player Chris Burns '04 (Quincy, Mass.), ice hockey player Kristin Suslowicz '05 (Stoughton, Mass.), and administrator/coach Dr. Christopher Kiernan (deceased).

The Athletic Hall of Fame committee (comprised of athletics, faculty, student life, and alumni representatives) reviewed the nominations submitted by various members of the Salve Regina community, and chose this year’s class to bring the total membership in the Seahawk Athletic Hall of Fame to 38 outstanding athletes/administrators. The annual Hall of Fame Induction Dinner and Ceremony will take place on Saturday, October 3, 2014 at 6 p.m. at Ochre Court. For more information on the induction ceremony please contact 800-821-2343.

Tracy Giroux '90 Tracy Giroux Harpin '90

Tracy Giroux Harpin '90 became the first 1,000-point scorer in women's basketball at Salve Regina during four consecutive winning seasons for the program ... she led team to two Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) championships and its first Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) tournament appearance ... she was a great role model on and off the court, a true team player ... the Newporters compiled a 65-26 won-loss record (.714) during her four seasons ...

Chris Burns '04 Chris Burns '04

Chris Burns '04 became the starting goalie for men's ice hockey early in his career and led the Seahawks to four consecutive seasons with double-digit victories ... a two-time New England College Hockey Writers All-Star, Burns holds all-time program records for games played as goaltender (69), wins (29), saves (2,029), saves per game (29.41), and shutouts (5) ... he came up big in the postseason leading Salve Regina to upset wins over top-seeded Tufts (2001) and second-seeded UMass Dartmouth (2002) ...

Kristin Suslowicz '05 Kristin Suslowicz '05

Kristin Suslowicz '05 arrived on campus in the second year of the women's ice hockey program's existence and became the full-time starting goaltender immediately ... she holds the NCAA career record for saves among all Division III goalies (3,202) ... her saves per game career mark (47.79) ranks first all-time in program history ... one of only four goalies in NCAA Division III history to stop over 1,000 shots in a single season  (1,001 saves in 2004-05) ...


Dr. Christopher M. Kiernan Dr. Christopher Kiernan

Dr. Christopher M. Kiernan spent 27 years at Salve Regina as a faculty member, administrator and everything in between, from head basketball coach to second in command ... Dr. Kiernan's contributions to Salve Regina were innumerable, and include guiding Salve Regina to national accreditation as a university to launching both the Humanities Ph.D. program and the NCAA Division III athletics program ... senior student-athletes with the highest grade point average annually receive an award named in his honor ... Dr. Kiernan, who was a member of the first class to be inducted into the Saint Joseph's College Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000, coached basketball when the only available gym for the students at Salve Regina was in Mercy Hall, and he used to say that "if you can make a layup and break a press in a phone booth, you can do it anywhere."
