NEWPORT, R.I. (Monday, April 15, 2024)-- Every game counts for Seahawk spring sports as each team gets closer and closer to their respective NEWMAC championships. Last week Salve Regina saw nine wins across the spring teams competing.

TUESDAY (Apr. 16)
Salve Regina baseball hosts Clark University at 3 p.m. The baseball team had a 3-1 week last week after beating Clark University 13-5 and Babson College 7-3 and 8-5 in a doubleheader. The Seahawks fell 5-1 to Trinity College on Wednesday, April 10. The team remains 8-1 in the NEWMAC heading into this week. Hunter Yaworski led the charge with a leadoff home run in the fifth inning of game two against Babson to break 5-5 and make it an 8-5 final.
Smith College will play Seahawk women's tennis at 3 p.m. at the Antone Academic Center. The program lost 6-3 to Wheaton College and 5-1 to Emerson College last week. Against Wheaton the pair of Kaydin Pinto and Graysen Scherer topped the Lyons 8-5 at number three doubles. Pinto went on to win at number five singles against Wheaton's Alissa Ortiz. Alexa Stevens was also victorious at number one singles.
Softball will travel to Johnson & Wales for a doubleheader on Tuesday. Game one begins at 4 p.m. It was a 5-1 week for softball last week. The Seahawks surpassed Mitchell College, and Clark University across both doubleheaders. Even though the team beat Emerson College 5-2 in game one on Friday, April 12, the Lions came back for a win in game two. Maddie Capetta saw three doubles and five RBIs against Clark. Capetta currently leads the Seahawks with 22 hits this season. Alex Kelly pitched in four games and won all three starts last week.
WEDNESDAY (Apr. 17)
Clark University invites men's tennis to the Corash Tennis Courts at 3:30. The team only played in one match last week and succumbed 9-0 to Wheaton College at the Clark Tennis Courts in Norton, Massachusetts. At number two doubles Jacob Faulise and Samuel Middleton were competitive with the Lyons in an 8-7 match but relented to the duo of Eli Hanlon Paul Berteaux.
The women's lacrosse team will hold their last home game of the regular season on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Mount Holyoke College. The team comes of a 1-1 week. In the Seahawks' first overtime game of the season women's lacrosse bested Wheaton College 13-12. Edie Threshie is credited with the game winning goal just 59 seconds into the overtime period. Head women's lacrosse coach Meghan Malloy spent four years as an assistant coach for the Wheaton Lyons before joining the Seahawks at the beginning of the 2024 season. Against No.15 Massachusetts Institute of Technology the Engineers dropped the Seahawks 19-6.
THURSDAY (Apr. 18)
Seahawk baseball will be on the road against Rhode Island College at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Since the 1998 season Salve Regina baseball is 13-7-1 against Rhode Island College. The last meeting on April 04, 2023, was an 11-2 win for the Seahawks. The teams tied 7-7 after 11 innings on Friday, April 8, 2016.
FRIDAY (Apr. 19)
For a NEWMAC contest softball will be hosting Massachusetts Institute of Technology in a doubleheader. Games will be held at 3 p.m. and 5 pm. Since the Seahawks 6-2 win on April 26, 2012, Salve Regina is 5-8 against the Engineers. Last season on March 10, 2023, MIT won both games of the doubleheader.
SATURDAY (Apr. 20)
Seahawk sailing races at a regatta held by Boston University at 10 a.m.
At 10:30 a.m. the Trinity Invitational will begin for the women's track and field team. At the Jerry Gravel Invitational last Saturday Anna Weygang won women's 5000-meter run setting a new school record with a time of 18:36.83. Right behind Weygang was Isabella Hastings who took second with a time of 18:40.71, which was 34 seconds faster than the third-place finisher.
Men's tennis and women's tennis both host matches on Saturday. Men's tennis invites Massachusetts Institute of Technology to Newport for a 10:30 a.m. start. At 2 p.m. Mount Holyoke College will go up against women's tennis.
The Clark University Cougars invite women's lacrosse to their campus for a 12 p.m. game. The Cougars and the Seahawks have no previous record going into the encounter. The Cougars will enter the game with a 7-7 overall record and a 3-5 conference record. The Seahawks sit at 8-6 overall and 2-5 in the NEWMAC, however this record will change after Wednesday's game against Mount Holyoke College.
The Pioneers of Springfield College host men's lacrosse at 12 p.m. This will be the first meeting of the Seahawks and Pride in men's lacrosse. Most recently Springfield beat the United States Coast Guard Academy 15-11. Earlier in the season Salve Regina also beat the Bears 12-10.
At James V. Sidell Stadium, Wheaton College's home venue, Seahawk baseball will rival with the Lyons at 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. The last time Salve Regina and Wheaton met on April 06, 2023, on Reynolds Field it was an 8-5 win for the home team.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Salve Regina softball play a doubleheader at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. in Worcester, Massachusetts at Rooftop Field. On May 13, 2016, which was Salve Regina and WPI's last meetings, the Seahawks lost 4-3. The most recent win for Salve Regina against WPI was a 7-5 success on May 10, 2014.
