Week at a Glance: Seahawks • April 1-7, 2024

NEWPORT, R.I. (Monday, April 1, 2024)-- Last week Salve Regina collectively won four games. In the next seven days Seahawk athletic teams will compete in 12 NEWMAC contests for a chance to move up in the conference.

MONDAY (Apr. 1)

Baseball hosts Springfield College at 3:30 p.m. on Reynolds Field. Last Tuesday, March 26, the Seahawks beat the Pride 1-0 after Christian Homa (Fairfield, Conn.) doubled in the top of the sixth inning, allowing Evan O'Rourke, who advanced to first on a walk, to cross home plate. On Saturday, March 30 the Seahawks topped Massachusetts Institute of Technology 11-0 and 16-0 in a doubleheader. The Seahawks sit at 16-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference. 

WEDNESDAY (Apr. 3)

Roger Williams will host Seahawk softball at 3:30 in Bristol, Rhode Island on Paolino Field. Last week Salve Regina fell 9-0 and 10-1 to Rhode Island College in their first home doubleheader of the season. The following Saturday the team played in their first NEWMAC game as a member of the conference against Wheaton College. In game one of the doubleheader the Lyons surged out to a 5-1 win, but the Seahawks overcame a 7-3 deficit in game two, entering extra innings tied at 7-7. However, the Lyons were able to get three runners to cross the plate even though Emily Lane (Tinton Falls, N.J.) made it home for a 10-8 final.

Women's lacrosse will be in Northampton, Massachusetts at 7 p.m. on Wednesday for a conference clash against the Smith College Pioneers. Last week the team saw the United States Coast Guard Academy. The Seahawks and Bears played a back-and-forth game until the score reached 2-2 at 6:33 in the first quarter. Coast Guard claimed a three-goal lead with the first 15 minutes down and leaped ahead 15-5. 

FRIDAY (Apr. 5)

At 3 p.m. the women's tennis team will be in Worcester, Massachusetts for a match hosted by the Clark University Cougars. Although the team was bested 9-0 by the Babson College Beavers last week the Casey Farrell (Cumberland, R.I.) and Kaydin Pinto (Acushnet, Mass.) duo was competitive in doubles play. 

The Wellesley Blue will make the trip to Newport for a softball doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. The Blue is 9-5 overall and 2-0 in the NEWMAC in 2024. Most recently Wellesley beat Clark University 3-2 and 6-1 in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 30. The Seahawks currently sit at 3-11 overall and 0-2 in the NEWMAC

SATURDAY (Apr. 6)

Sailing starts out the day with a home regatta at 10 a.m. 

Women's track and field will be at the Jim Sheehan Invitational, hosted by Fitchburg State University, at 10 a.m. The Seahawks saw a first-place finish and several personal bests at the Corsair Classic last Saturday. Freshman Anna Weygang (Farmington, Conn.) won the women's 5000 meter run with a time of 18:53.17. 

The Babson College Beavers invite women's lacrosse to MacDowell Field in Wellesley, Massachusetts for a 12 p.m. game. This will be the first meeting of the Seahawks and No. 21 Beavers. Babson is 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference after beating the United States Coast Guard Academy, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, and Emerson College. The Seahawks are 7-3 overall and 1-2 in the NEWMAC

Baseball will make the trip to Nitchman Field in New London, Connecticut to see the United States Coast Guard Academy Bears for a doubleheader. Game one begins at 12 p.m. The Seahawks are 12-6 against the Bears in all-time records. The first meeting was a 9-4 win on April 25, 1987. Most recently Salve Regina beat Coast Guard 5-4 on March 09, 2014. 

The only home event of the day begins at 12 p.m. at the Antone Academic Center when women's tennis hosts Wellesley College. Salve Regina and Wellesley do not have a prior record. The Blue has a 2024 record of 8-9 and 6-2 in conference. 

Softball will be at Smith College on Saturday for a doubleheader against the Pioneers. First pitch of game one is at 12 p.m. The two programs have only played three times since the 2014 spring season. The most recent contest on March 13, 2023, was a 7-6 loss for the Seahawks. Before that on March 13, 2017, Salve Regina beat Smith 15-6. 

To end a busy day for the Seahawks men's lacrosse will be at Wheaton College at 4 p.m. Since the spring of 2002 Salve Regina has gone 2-2 against Wheaton. When the Seahawks last contended with the Lyons on February 28, 2018, it was a 13-8 win. 

SUNDAY (Apr. 7)

Both women's tennis and men's tennis will venture to Springfield, Massachusetts and the Appleton Tennis Courts for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. matches to close out the week.
