Week at a Glance: Seahawks • March 18-24, 2024

NEWPORT, R.I. (Monday, March 18, 2024)--The Seahawks return from spring break with a slate of conference and nonconference games. Last week women's lacrosse and men's lacrosse clinched their first NEWMAC conference games. 

The baseball, softball, men's tennis and women's tennis teams return from their training trips after a packed week of contests. Baseball went 6-0 while in Auburndale, Florida. Softball returns from Tucson, Arizona with a 3-7 record after beating Eastern Connecticut State University, Dickinson College, and the University of Texas at Dallas.

TUESDAY (Mar. 19)

Women's lacrosse goes head-to-head with the University of Saint Joseph at 4 p.m. in Hartford, Connecticut. The Seahawks played two games last week, beating Bridgewater State University 15-13 and Wellesley College 12-9, in the program's first NEWMAC game as a member of the conference. Stella McCormack recorded four goals against the Bears; Edie Threshie and Samantha Moleti both netted three. Against the Blue, Salve Regina outshot Wellesley 33-25. Daniella Bruno ended the day with a hat trick. NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Week, Grace Haesche made a combined 28 saves and nabbed four ground balls. 

THURSDAY (Mar. 21)

Mitchell College will make the trip to Newport to take on Seahawk baseball at 3 p.m. on Reynolds Field. Salve Regina is 11-1 in 2024. Notably, last week Tyler Petrosino reached base on 12-of-14 plate appearances with two home runs, one of which was a grand slam, in the team's whopping 21-10 win over the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. On Wednesday, March 13, the Seahawks overcame a 5-0 deficit to beat Rochester Institute of Technology when Shea Donovan singled to left field and Kyle Platt scored. 

SATURDAY (Mar. 23)

The sailing team has two squads competing on Saturday at 10 a.m. Crews will race at Bowdoin College and at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. 

Women's track attends their first meet of the season on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. The Seahawks will be at the Sean Livingston Invitational, hosted by Roger Williams University at Portsmouth High School. 

In a lacrosse double header at Gaudet Field women's lacrosse will host Springfield College at 12 p.m. and men's lacrosse invites Clark University to play at 3 p.m. This will be the first meeting of the Seahawks and the Pride in women's lacrosse. The Pride is 5-1 overall in 2024 and the Seahawks come in at 6-1. Beginning with the 2001 season, Men's lacrosse is 7-5 against the Clark Cougars. The Seahawks will enter the matchup with a 2-4 overall record while the Cougars are 3-5. 

Baseball will also play a double header against Husson University on Saturday. Game one begins at 12 p.m. and game two will commence at 2 p.m. Salve Regina is 4-2 all-time against Husson beginning with the spring 2006 season. When the teams last played on Match 18, 2023, Salve Regina won 3-0. The Eagles will enter the game with a 2-4 overall record. 

Men's and women's tennis both compete at 1 p.m. The women's tennis team will be in Worcester, Massachusetts playing Clark University and the men's team will make the trip to New London, Connecticut to take on the United States Coast Guard Academy. Last week both teams had the chance to compete in Orlando, Florida before seeing fellow NEWMAC foes. Among the week's action, on the men's side Samuel Middleton and Ned Batstone posted a pair of singles victories against Hamline University. On the women's side Casey Farrell led the way in singles play against Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis, winning set one 6-4 and set two 6-2.

SUNDAY (Mar. 24)

Seahawk softball ends the week at Johnson & Wales University with a double header beginning at 1 p.m. The first battle between the Seahawks and the Wildcats dates back to the spring of 1993, when Salve Regina won 16-1. Since then, the teams are tied at 8-8 all-time. The most recent contest was a 2-1 win for the Seahawks on April 26, 2023.
