Week at a Glance: Seahawks • November 20-26, 2023

NEWPORT, R.I.-- (November 20, 2023) – Salve Regina enters the Thanksgiving week with six contests on the horizon, all of which will be away games taking place in Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut and Maine.
The Seahawks collectively won four times and tied twice last week. Among the successes the football team narrowly beat the Anna Maria AMCATS 37-34 to clinch the New England Bowl title. Salve Regina finished the 2023 inaugural NEWMAC season with a 9-2 overall record and a 6-1 conference record. The last time the team achieved nine victories was in 2012. Sam Capodice, reserve quarterback, earned Most Valuable Player Award for the bowl game. Although the AMCATS were the first to get on the board Salve Regina entered halftime up 16-12. The AMCATS came back for a 14-point run however Salve Regina held them off with time on their side.
The cross country season finished up last weekend with freshman Isabella Hastings competing at the NCAA DIII Cross Country Championships. Hastings finished 243 out of 292 runners, posting a time of 23:30.2. She was 32nd among all of the freshman competing. Hastings is now the third Salve Regina women's cross country athlete ever to qualify for the championship.

TUESDAY (Nov. 21)
The week starts out on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. when the women's basketball team travels to Boston, Massachusetts to play Suffolk University. Last Wednesday the team fell 84-64 to UMass Dartmouth and 72-65 to Vassar College, but snapped back for a 100-56 victory over Keystone College in the consolation round of the Hampton Inn Holiday Classic. It was the first time since 1998 that women's basketball reached the 100-point mark in a single game. Ashley Rourke led the game in scoring with 21 points and Amanda Folan protected the ball with nine rebounds at the net.
Men's basketball will also be on the road against Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts at 6 p.m. The Seahawks fell to UMass Boston (66-62), beat Regis College (82-65) and lost to Curry College (58-57) last week but have two more opportunities for advancement this week. In the exhilarating one-point loss to Curry the Colonels hit a three-point basket at the buzzer to creep ahead. Jojo Powers was atop the points category (21) and Miles Fiore had 11 assists.
To finish out the night, women's hockey takes the ice in Salem, Massachusetts against the Salem State University Vikings at 7 p.m. The Seahawks moved to 4-1-1 and 2-1-1 in the CCC last week after falling 1-0 to the University of New England in overtime and tying 2-2 with the Nor'easters the next day. The 2-2 game goes down as an official NCAA tie, however it moved to a shootout for CCC scoring purposes and on the fourth goal attempt the puck sailed off Gina Richard's stick into New England's net. During the contest freshman Kyra Mittendorf earned her first collegiate goal in the second period.
SATURDAY (NOV. 25)
After a brief three-day intermission from competitions the Seahawks have two games on Saturday. Women's ice hockey will be in New London, Connecticut playing the Connecticut College Camels at 3 p.m. The Seahawks are 3-12 all-time against the Camels. Connecticut college has only played two games yet this season, both against the Wesleyan University Cardinals. The Camels are at .500 after winning one of the two matchups.
Men's ice hockey traverses to the Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational beginning with a faceoff against SUNY Brockport at 5 p.m. in Saratoga Springs, New York. Brockport is 2-5 this season with wins over Chatham University (2-1) and SUNY Potsdam (6-3). The Seahawks and the Golden Eagles have no prior record going into the game. Last week the Seahawks fell 2-1 to the Albertus Magnus Falcons and bested the Western New England Golden Bears twice. The Seahawks maintain their No.10 ranking in the United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) poll for the second week in a row.
SUNDAY (NOV. 26)
The men's basketball team treks up to Waterville, Maine for a 1 p.m. tipoff against the Colby College Mules. The Seahawks and Mules have only played once before, and it was a 73-69 loss for Salve Regina in 2022. The Mules are 2-2 in 2023 with losses to Emerson College and the University of Saint Joseph.
Based Saturday's results men's ice hockey will either play in the Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational consolation game at 1 p.m. or the championship game at 4 p.m. The opponent will be the Tufts University Jumbos or the Skidmore College Thoroughbreds. In all-time series records men's hockey is 2-2 against Skidmore, with the last meetup a 3-2 win in 2018. Tufts has a 4-1 advantage over Salve Regina, however the last time the two programs saw each other was in 2006.
