Week at a Glance: Seahawks • October 9-15, 2023

NEWPORT, R.I. (October 9, 2023) – Salve Regina now has seven weeks of NEWMAC competition experience. Seahawk teams are starting to see where they matchup against conference rivals, make offensive and defensive tweaks and set new goals for the end of the fall season. Winter sports including women's ice hockeywomen's basketball, men's ice hockey and men's basketball are preparing for the start of their seasons and preseason exhibition contests will begin.  

Last week in NEWMAC action, field hockey beat Wheaton College 4-1 and Football defeated the United States Coast Guard Academy 38-7. Sophomore Thomas Cea Jr. scored three touchdowns and gained 100 of the Seahawks 281 rushing yards. Junior Jake Stack's 19 completed passes gave him a 242-yard total and freshman Vaughn Randle made all five PAT kicks.

TUESDAY (Oct. 10) 

The men's soccer team will go up against Westfield State University in Westfield, Mass. at 7 p.m. Salve Regina is 5-7 overall and last week the team fell 1-0 to Bridgewater State University and 1-0 to Babson College. Senior Jordan Borges and freshman Daniel Goba are the leading scorers this season with four goals each. Junior Ethan David has contributed two goals and is close behind Borges and Goba. The Westfield St. matchup will be the team's 13th game. The Seahawks and the Owls have not played in recent years and therefore have no win-loss record. The Owls have had a 4-5-1 season going into the game. 

Women's volleyball will host Smith College in the first of two home volleyball matches of the week at 7 p.m. at the Rodgers Recreation Center. Both of this week's matchups will involve a NEWMAC counterpart. The Seahawks are 10-8 in 2023 and have yet to win a conference matchup. This season's leaders include Brighton Solheim with 234 kills and 677 total attempts, Siena DeCicco with 576 attacks and Kate Murphy with 246 digs. Smith has a 12-7 win-loss record in 2023. 

WEDNESDAY (Oct. 11)  

Seahawk field hockey will be on the road in Bellingham, Mass. playing Dean College at 3 p.m. Last week was a 1-1 week for Salve Regina after their 4-1 conference win over Wheaton and a 6-1 loss to Babson College. The program is 6-4 overall and 2-3 in conference matchups. Senior Shannon Kennedy, sophomore Julia Decker and sophomore Georgia Costello were key contributors to the Wheaton success. Salve Regina has an all-time record of 2-0 against Dean and the Seahawks won 10-0 in 2022 when they last met. 

Women's soccer will play a road game against the Clark University Cougars in Worcester, Mass at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The Seahawks are 1-1 in all-time records against Clark after a 4-3 win in 2021 and a 3-0 loss in 2022. Nether program is favored going into the contest and both will be vying for a NEWMAC win. Last week Salve Regina fell to Emerson College and Smith College. Freshman Olivia Tacconi put the Seahawks on the board in the Emerson matchup with an assist from sophomore Taylor Barnaby. 

SATURDAY (OCT. 14) 

As the busiest day of the week for Salve Regina, Saturday will feature 12 contests. Beginning at 9 a.m. the equestrian team will host a home competition at Eastfield Farm LLC at Bluemead Stable in Rehoboth, Mass.

The sailing team races at four different regattas on Saturday: The Savin Hill Invite hosted by Boston College, Crew's Regatta hosted by Massachusetts Maritime Academy, the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Invite and the Salve Regina Invite hosted by the Seahawks in Newport, R.I. All racing begins at 10 a.m. and several regattas will continue competition on Sunday, October 15. 

The women's cross country and men's cross country teams will race in Springfield, Mass. at the Western New England Invitational. The women's team will begin racing at 10:30 a.m. and the men's program will cross the starting line at 11:15 a.m. On October 7, both teams raced at the James Earley Cross Country Meet hosted by Westfield State University. On the women's side the top five Salve Regina finishers all ran personal best times. Freshman Isabella Hastings placed sixth in 23:07.05 for 6k and junior Avery Braccia came in 36th with 24:28.30. For the men, Shane Behn led the way with a 30:11.18 8k-finish followed by Ty Gallagher who crossed the line in 31:02.98. 

Field hockey will play Mount Holyoke College for another chance at NEWMAC competition on Saturday. The game will be played on the Lyons home field in South Hadley, Mass. at noon. Salve Regina has a 0-2 record against Mount Holyoke, however the teams have not faced off since October 16, 2000. Saturday's game will be a fresh slate for both programs. The Lyons are 8-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play. 

In the second matchup of the week featuring the Clark Cougars, men's soccer will host their ninth home game of the season at 1 p.m. on Toppa Field. Clark is 2-7-3 this season and most recently lost 4-0 to Coast Guard. Last year, the only time in recent history that the Seahawks and Cougars have played, the Seahawks came away with a 3-2 win. 

Women's soccer will once again be on the road, this time in Cambridge, Mass. when they play conference rival, Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 1 p.m. The Engineers are 10-1-1 in 2023 after tying with Brandeis University (1-1) and losing to Tufts University (0-3). 

Babson University will be in town when the women's volleyball team hosts the Beavers on campus at 1 p.m. for the team's second home game and NEWMAC matchup of the week. The Seahawks and the Beavers have an all-time record of 3-3 giving the winning team of this year's contest the upper hand. In 2022 Salve Regina lost 3-0, however before last year, 2013 was the programs' last meeting.  

Winter is just around the corner and both women's ice hockey and men's ice hockey will kick off their seasons with scrimmages on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday men's ice hockey will travel to New Hampshire to face Plymouth State University. 

SUNDAY (Oct. 15) 

Both men's rugby and women's rugby will travel to Beverly, Mass to play Endicott College on Sunday. Women's Rugby will begin at noon and Men's rugby will have a 3 p.m. start. 

To finish off the weekend, the women's ice hockey team will host Albertus Magnus College at St. Georges School in Middletown R.I. at 4 p.m.
