NEWPORT, R.I. (Friday, June 25, 2021) - Plans were finalized earlier this month on a partnership between the town of Middletown and Salve Regina University to renovate the surfaces of the field and track at the J.H. Gaudet Athletic Complex off Turner Road. The track has been milled (June 16) and the turf has been removed (June 21) while a new carpet of FieldTurf will be installed beginning Monday, June 28.

Following a three-week settling period, another three-week installation begins on July 19 for the replacement track.

The complex will reopen the week of August 9 for Salve Regina University scheduled sports (includes field hockey, lacrosse, track and field), Middletown public schools, and public use.

When all this work finishes, the Gaudet Athletic Complex will further cement its reputation as the premier outdoor athletic facilities not only on Aquidneck Island, but the entire region.

Not only does this include the new field turf and track, but refurbished tennis and basketball courts, the overhauled baseball field, several practice fields as well as a community playground. In the fall, new multipurpose fields on the former Starlight Drive-In property are slated to open.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING ...

JODY MOORADIAN, Salve Regina University, Director of Athletics
We're excited to see the new field and track. It's always good to have great partnerships. Our partnership with Middletown at Gaudet has been beneficial for both.

JEN FOSTER, Salve Regina University, Field Hockey Head Coach
We are excited to get back to Gaudet and play on the new surface in August. Field hockey is a surface dependent sport and these renovations will benefit our program in many ways.

MATT HIRD, Salve Regina University, Women's Track and Field Head Coach
We have terrific student-athletes who daily work to get better and improve their performances. This new track will enable them to train more efficiently and effectively. Our sprinters will get more feedback from the track and experience quicker legs. Our jumpers will be able to refine their techniques and our distance runners will be able to hit their targets in practice with a decreased energy expenditure. I know they will all be super excited when they see it for the first time!
