Salve Regina University Athletics - Awards and Honors


Since the early 1980s, Salve Regina athletes and teams have gathered to recognize the finest sports achievements on the Newport campus. An annual awards ceremony at the Bazarsky Lecture Hall now includes over 400 varsity athletes from their respective 20 programs with this theme - 20 sports, 1 team. The event is punctuated with an entertaining highlight film.

Below are some of the significant honors a Salve Regina student (or staff member in some cases) may receive:

CoSIDA Academic All-America® program - CoSIDA began this program in the 1950s, and since then, has honored thousands of deserving student-athletes from numerous sports and across all divisions with these elite Academic All-America® scholar-athlete honors.

National College Athlete Honor Society (Chi Alpha Sigma) - Chi Alpha Sigma is a nonprofit organization established to recognize college student athletes who earn a varsity letter in at least one sport while maintaining a 3.4 or higher cumulative GPA throughout their junior and senior years.

RIAIAW Distinguished Student Athlete - The Distinguished Student-Athlete Award is presented to one female athlete from each of the state's nine collegiate institutions. The criteria for the RIAIAW Distinguished Athlete of the Year Award has three key components. The honoree must possess leadership qualities. She must stand as a role model to others, displaying such coveted assets as perseverance, commitment, ethical behavior and academic success. She must enjoy an above average degree of physical talent.

SEAHAWK SPIRIT AWARD - Presented to an individual or group recognized by the college community for undying support, in a positive manner, for all Seahawk sports and athletes.

SISTER PHILEMON BANIGAN AWARD - Presented to an individual who through his or her efforts and dedication behind the scenes makes a positive contribution to the intercollegiate athletics program.

OUTSTANDING FACULTY MEMBER AWARD - Member of the faculty who is distinguished by a demonstrated commitment to teaching and to fostering the intellectual and personal growth of Salve Regina students. In addition, this faculty member is recognized for his or her extraordinary concern for and support of the academic lives of Salve Regina student-athletes. He or she is being honored as a teacher with high standards, great skill, and an exceptional commitment to the success of Salve Regina student-athletes.

SERVICE AWARDS - Student-athletes (any class) who demonstrate dedication to community service, outreach programs, and enriching the lives of others.

CLASS AWARDS - One male and female athlete from each class (freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior) is chosen for outstanding scholar-athlete achievements through the following criteria - documented achievement in his/her sport, national or conference accomplishments and recognition, leadership ability, involvement in helping others on his/her team or the program at large, involvement in community service, academic achievement, citizenship. Beginning in 2017, the senior female is recognized with the Meghan Strathman Award and the senior male is recognized with the Brother Michael Reynolds Award.

HABERSHAW STEWARDSHIP AWARD (seniors only) - Presented to a male and female student-athlete who has earned the respect of fellow athletes, coaches, and administration for superior athletics and for continually demonstrating those qualities associated with good sportsmanship (i.e. fair play, positive attitude, cooperation, stewardship).

DISTINGUISHED SCHOLAR-ATHLETE (seniors only) - The male and female student-athletes who have achieved the highest grade point average while participating in varsity athletics for four years. The recipient of this award will also be honored with the University’s Chris Kiernan Scholar-Athlete Award for academic excellence.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR - Student-athletes (any class) who are recognized by the college community for superior athletic ability and outstanding contribution to their team/sport.

McAULEY CUP - Recognizes the team(s) with outstanding performance in season, in academics, and in community service.
