Gettysburg, Pa. – The Salve Regina University women's volleyball team dropped three out of four matches to open the 2014 season at the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic over the weekend.

The Seahawks won their first match against Alfred University 3-0, and then lost their next three matches.

Against Alfred the Seahawks posted scores of 25-16, 25-9, and 25-11 for the 3-0 victory.  Senior Jennifer Duggan (Merrimack, N.H.) led the team with 11 kills; senior Taylor Violet (Tiverton, R.I.) registered 29 assists; and senior libero Dianna Tauro (Melrose, Mass.) had 9 digs.

Salve Regina then lost to Muhlenberg in a very competitive match. Salve dropped the first set 26-24, but rallied to win the second set 25-23, before losing the next two sets 25-14, and 25-22 respectively.  Duggan recorded 12 kills, Tauro added 16 digs. Duggan, Katelyn Beauregard, (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Emily Lipinski (Hampden, Mass.) each tallied blocks and Taylor Violet had 31 assists in the loss.

The Seahawks next lost to the Eagles of Eastern University on Saturday 3-0 by scores of 25-18, 25-18, 25-9.  Senior Erin McGloin (West Islip, N.Y.) led the team with five kills; Duggan totaled seven digs; Violet added 12 assists; and Beauregard blocked one shot.

In its final match of the tournament Salve Regina was defeated by Washington College 3-0, by scores of 25-19, 25-7, and 27-25.  Duggan led the team again with eight kills; Tauro registered 16 digs; and Violet added 24 assists.

Overall the Seahawks now sit at 1-3 on the season, ending the tournament on a three-game losing streak, but third-year head coach Lauren Parsons is optimistic as the team heads back to Newport for its first game inside the Rogers Recreation Center.

"I saw some good things and things we need to work on," Parsons said, "but it's still early and with the competition we played it will definitely prepare us for conference play."

Salve Regina's next match will be on Thursday September 4, at 7 p.m. against the Lesley Lynx in the home opener for the Seahawks.
