Lions secure CCC playoff spot with 6-3 win over Seahawks
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team collected a 6-3 victory over Salve Regina Tuesday afternoon to clinch its first Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament berth since 2004.
The Lions improve to 8-4 on the year and 4-4 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the win. The Seahawks sink to 2-8 overall and 1-7 in league action with the setback.
Sharon Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) topped Priscilla Gaspard and Erin Stangel 8-2 at the No. 1 doubles position.
Jordan Cressman (Bowmanstown, Pa.) and Adele Duval (Reading, Calif.) edged Abigail Burke and Darcy Carlin at the second spot 8-6.
Veronica Jimenez (Lynn, Mass.) and Alecia Tubbs (Rochester, Mass.) dropped an 8-6 decision to Shealyn FitzPatrick and Cate McGee at the No. 3 slot.
Biondi notched her third singles victory in a row, downing Gaspard 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 1 position.
Duval posted her team-leading 10th singles win of the fall, prevailing 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 2 spot over Stangel.
Steelman rolled past Burke 6-1, 6-3 at the third position to earn her ninth singles victory of the year.
Tubbs rallied past Annemarie Haas in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the No. 5 slot. After dropping the first set 6-3, Tubbs bounced back to claim the second set 6-4 before triumphing 10-6 in the super-tiebreaker.
Jimenez fell in three sets at the No. 4 position to Carlin and Angeline Vick (Jamestown, N.Y.) suffered a straight-sets loss at the sixth spot. FitzPatrick earned two of the Seahawks' three points.
