Seahawks compete indoors at Wheaton Invitational

NORTON, Mass. - After the tease of 70 degree weather late last week, the real "spring" returned to New England and forced the Wheaton Invitational Women's Tennis Tournament indoors at the Beard Field House on the Lyons' campus.

Salve Regina University competed in the two singles, two doubles event. The Seahawks drew familiar foe Endicott in the first round at first singles and first doubles. Amy Heacox defeated Seahawk senior Nichol Stevens (Chester, Conn.) in their first-round meeting at first singles. Seniors Emily Annis and Kate Cioffi were winners over freshmen Erica Shay (Concord, Mass.) and Emily Walters (Wethersfield, Conn.).

Another Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent, Roger Williams, participated and Seahawk freshman Elizabeth DiFilippo (West Chester, Pa.) drew Hawk sophomore Samantha Curran in the first round. Curran advanced in the championship bracket while DiFilippo landed in the consolation bracket and scored an 8-2 win over Endicott's Gina Pinciaro.

Salve Regina's second doubles pair, sophomores Olivia Johnson (Springfield, Vt.) and Annie Mallin (Fairfield, Conn.), drew a familiar foe in Wheaton College sophomore Jessica Moore, who competed as a Seahawk in 2010-11. The Lyons advanced in the championship bracket while the Seahawks fell to Endicott in consolation action.

Shay and Walters took on Wheaton's Morgan Bell and Sarah Crum in a consolation first doubles match with the host school emerging victorious.
