Saporito's OT goal gives Salve Regina 3-2 victory

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Sophomore midfielder Angelina Saporito (Bristol, Conn.) touched in a loose ball for an overtime game-winner as Salve Regina University women's soccer improved to 2-1 on the season with a 3-2 victory over visiting UMass Dartmouth at Gaudet Field. The Corsairs (1-1) suffered their first loss of the season and second straight to the Seahawks who won last year's meeting, 5-4, also in overtime.

Saporito's OT tally came courtesy of a feed from graduate student Caitlin Eastwood (Seymour, Conn.) from 30 yards out that eluded the interception attempt of Corsair keeper Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, Mass.). Eastwood had given Salve Regina a 2-1 lead in the 84th minute when she headed in a corner kick from senior Ashley Jamieson (Warwick, R.I.).

UMass Dartmouth rallied from one-goal deficits on two occasions.

Seahawk freshman Jessica Broadhurst (Scarborough, Maine), just inserted into the game when Jamieson was setting up a first-half corner kick, converted that corner with a header down to the right side of Chauvin. It was Broadhurst's first collegiate goal.

Maura Gonsalves (Dartmouth, Mass.) tied the score at 1-1 at the 55:30 mark when she booted in a cross to the middle from sophomore classmate Shelby Friedland (New Bedford, Mass.). Overtime appeared to be the destination until Eastwood, who sat out her entire senior season with an injury, delivered Jamieson's corner past the left side of Chauvin with five and a half minutes remaining.

With just a minute and a half remaining in regulation, Friedland's shot from the left side was stopped by Seahawk keeper Jacqueline McPherson (Mansfield, Mass.) but Gonsalves jarred the ball loose and tapped in the equalizer.

Chauvin finished with seven saves for the Corsairs while McPherson stopped nine including a point blank attempt from Friedland in the 86th minute. Salve Regina plays at Wheaton (Mass.) on Saturday while UMass Dartmouth hosts Nichols College, its third of four straight CCC opponents to open the season.
