Women's soccer topped by Colonials in season opener

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — The Salve Regina University women's soccer team opened the 2012 season on Friday afternoon, dropping a 3-0 decision to Western Connecticut State University at the Farmingdale Kick-Off Tournament.

The two teams remained scoreless through much of the first half, until the Colonials managed to jump on the scoreboard with a pair of goals in the final five minutes of the opening stanza.

Freshman forward Kelsey Chacho (Plainville, Conn.) scored an unassisted goal in the 41st minute and Danielle Soucy (Clinton, Conn.) finished off a corner kick from Jean Yettito (Danbury, Conn.) with 1:28 remaining before the break to give WCSU a 2-0 halftime lead.

Tracy Sales (Cumberland, R.I.added an insurance goal in the 54th minutes off a nice feed from Alexandra Moravsky (Sherman, Conn.) to complete the 3-0 final.

Senior net minder Caitlin Avery (East Hampton, Conn.) made two saves before yielding to classmate Jamie Trayer (Oakville, Conn.) who also made two stops for the Colonials.

Salve Regina's Jacqueline McPherson (Mansfield, Mass.) made seven saves for the Seahawks.

The Seahawks will return to action on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. when they face Farmingdale State.
