Two second-half goals propel Gordon past Salve Regina, 2-1

WENHAM, Mass. - The Gordon women's soccer team scored two second-half goals to come from behind to defeat Salve Regina 2-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) quarterfinal play.

With the victory the Fighting Scots advance to the semifinals where they will play at Endicott at 1p.m. on Wednesday, November 4th.

The victory came courtesy of two early second half goals that were scored just 14 seconds apart. Trailing 1-0 in the 49th minute, Gordon knotted the score when Hala Coker's curling free kick was volleyed into the net by senior midfielder Christin Peters. It was the fourth goal of the season for Peters, who was recently named Second Team All-TCCC.

Just off the ensuing kickoff, Caitlin Nedde escaped down the left wing and broke in alone on net. She blasted a shot past Salve Regina goalkeeper Katie Vaudrain (Pawtucket, R.I.), giving the Scots a 2-1 lead that would stand up the rest of the way.

Salve Regina took a first half lead on a beautiful goal from Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.) in the 23rd minute. Birrell received a cross from Kendra Andrie (Muskegon, Mich.) and scored from close range for her 15th goal of the season.

Gordon outshot the visiting Seahawks 10-5 in the first half, but were stymied by an excellent performance from Vaudrain. The second half was a different story as Gordon controlled play for virtually the entire 45 minutes. The Seahawks had a late opportunity with a free kick from close range, but Jennifer Duval's shot was blocked by the Gordon defensive wall.

Vaudrain finished with eight saves, while her counterpart, Abby Ytzen, posted four saves for the Scots.

Gordon moves to 10-8-1 overall, while Salve Regina concludes its season at 11-8.
