Seahawks return to Wenham to face Gordon in TCCC Quarterfinals

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina University women's soccer team has earned the No. 5 seed in the 2009 The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Tournament and will travel to No. 4 Gordon for a quarterfinal contest on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 1 p.m.

One year after finishing with a 4-15 (3-10 TCCC) record, the Seahawks own an 11-7 mark in 2009 and an 8-5 mark in conference play. Freshman Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.) leads the Seahawks and sits third in TCCC with 14 goals, and her 39 points also leads the team and places her second in the conference. Sophomore Liz Galla (Beacon Falls, Conn.) is second in both goals (13) and points (30), and senior goalkeeper Katie Vaudrain (Pawtucket, R.I.) boasts a goals against of 2.01 and a save percentage of .766.

The Scots (9-8-1, 8-4-1 TCCC) lead the all-time series, 15-5-1, and have won the last five meetings, including a 2-0 decision in Wenham on Tuesday in the regular-season finale. Hala Coker and Caitlin Nedde each scored for Gordon and Abby Ytzen made four saves to earn the shutout. On the season, Nedde leads the Scots in goals (13) and points (28).

"We're looking forward to this rematch," said Salve Regina head coach Kerri Scroope. "We know we did not play our best game on Tuesday, and we feel like we have some unfinished business. All season long, we've talked about improving every game heading into the playoffs, and now it's time to put that hard work to the test."
