Govoni, Baston and Haesche to captain women's lacrosse

NEWPORT, R.I.-- Head women's lacrosse coach Meghan Malloy has named Julia Govoni '24 (Lakeville, Mass.), Cameron Baston '25 (Plantsville, Conn.) and Grace Haesche '25 (Warwick, N.Y.) captains for the 2024 season. 

Julia Govoni is a returning 2023 captain and four-year member of the team. She begins the season with career record of 31 games played, 25 games started, nine goals, two assists, 27 ground balls, five draw controls and 11 caused turnovers. Govoni is double-majoring in English and communications and minoring in business administration. She leads the Seahawks as an attacker, wearing number five. 

Cameron Baston joins Govoni for her first year as captain and her third year on the team. As a junior, defender wearing number 28, Baston has played in 30 games, made 31 goals, provided 13 assists, secured 40 ground balls, faced 48 draw controls and caused 23 turnovers. Baston is majoring in psychology at Salve Regina. 

The final member of the women's lacrosse leadership team, Grace Haesche accompanies Baston and Govoni for her first year in a captain role and third year on the team. On the field Haesche stands between the goal posts and wears number double zero. She begins the 2024 season with a career 31 games played, 327 saves, 18 wins and 13 losses. Haesche is a psychology major. 

"I am thrilled to have Jules, Cam and Grace be the captains of our team," said coach Malloy. "Their hard work and dedication has helped create a strong dynamic. With their influence and leadership, they will continue to support their teammates throughout the 2024 season."

The Seahawks host Simmons University at 7 p.m. on February 21, for the 2024 home opener. Last year the team finished out the season 9-8 overall and 5-3 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. This is Salve Regina's inaugural season in the New England Woman's and Men's Athletic Conference. The Seahawks were ranked seventh above Wellesley College, Emerson College, Clark University and Mount Holyoke College in the NEWMAC coaches' preseason poll released on Thursday, February 8.
