Cox and Richard earn All-Conference honors, Richard claims rookie of the year

BEVERLY, Mass. (Monday, March 4, 2024)-- The Commonwealth Coast Conference has named Maddie Cox '24M to the 2023-24 CCC All-Conference First Team and Gina Richard '27 to the 2023-24 CCC All-Conference Second Team in women's ice hockey. Richard, who led the CCC in goals scored her freshman year, has been titled CCC Rookie of the Year by the conference.

Richard, hailing from Northborough, Massachusetts, appeared in all 26 games this season, scored 15 goals and provided six assists. She made an immediate impact by scoring the team's first goal of the season to lead the Seahawks to a 4-1 victory over Johnson & Wales University. Richard scored the game winning goal in Salve Regina's 4-0 shutout over Curry College on December 3, 2023. In the Seahawks final contest of the 2023-24 regular season Richard netted the game winning goal at 13:34 in the second period for a 2-1 victory over Nichols College. This success secured Salve Regina's spot in the postseason.

"Very deserving of Gina to be rewarded with CCC Rookie of the Year and Second Team All-Conference," said head coach David Lun. "She established a strong work ethic before arriving to campus in the fall and was dedicated to continuing to build that foundation throughout the course of the year. She epitomizes the commitment it takes to succeed at this level and has displayed a natural leadership quality to bring her fellow peers into her environment. I'm very excited to see her skill progress and the career she will have in a Seahawks uniform."

Richard is joined by graduate captain Maddie Cox, who represents the Seahawks on the CCC All-Conference First Team. Cox, originally from Barrington, Rhode Island, joined women's ice hockey in 2019. Across her five years with the team she appeared in 102 games, scored 19 goals, made 23 assists and is credited with six game winning goals. She sank the game winning goal on January 13, 2024, in Salve Regina's 3-2 overtime victory topping 2023-24 CCC champion, Western New England University. During the 2023-24 season Cox played in her 100th career game as a Seahawk.

I'm very happy to see Maddie rewarded with a CCC First Team All-Conference award," stated Lun. "She has been one of our most consistent players this season and throughout the course of her career. She has been in a leadership position since her junior year helping to lead this program through its rebuilding phase, giving it stability and accountability on the ice and in the locker room. Very deserving of her to receive this award at the end of her career!"
