MIDDLETOWN, R.I.-- In day two of a home and home series the Salve Regina women's ice hockey team shutout the Curry College Colonels 4-0 in regulation.

After 20 scoreless minutes Gina Richard had the game winning goal at 3:53 in the second period. Richard was followed up by Fiona Simcox, Caroline Pekkala and Emma Breen

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Salve Regina 4, Curry 0
Records: Salve Regina (7-1-2, 4-1-1 CCC), Curry (2-6-2, 0-4-2 CCC)
All-Time Series: Since the 2021-22 season the Seahawks have a 6-1 record against the Colonels. The team's only loss came on Saturday, December 3, 2022.

BREAKDOWN:

  • Period I: The Colonels won the opening faceoff of the day and shortly after got in the first shot as well. Sarah Kerr of the Colonels and Ellee Kopecky served as the two goalies for the game. Both teams were even in the opening 20 minutes, each with eight shots on goal. Curry was sent to the penalty box twice in the first period, once for slashing and later for tripping. Following the Colone's tripping call, the Seahawks too, were called for a tripping penalty. In a skirmish in front of the curry net, the Seahawks almost found their first goal of the day, but after the officials' review the goal was declared no-good, and the period came to a close at 0-0.
  • Period II: The Colonels were looking for redemption from last night's overtime loss and won the opening faceoff but immediately turned over the puck to Emma Pereira, who took a shot with 12 seconds down. Pereira's attempt was saved by Sarah Kerr. Only three minutes later Gina Richard made the game winning goal with 3:53 gone from the clock. In quick succession, a little under two minutes later Fiona Simcox sent the puck between Curry's posts (from Jillian Egan and Maddie Cox), bringing the score to 2-0. The remaining 14 minutes of the period saw no scoring; however, the Colonel's took five shots on goal and the Seahawks attempted nine shots on goal to keep the game energetic.
  • Period III: In an attempt to get on the board, the Colonels made the move to pull their goalie twice, giving them an extra skater on the ice. Salve Regina did not let the extra Colonel skater slow them down. Both of the Seahawk goals in the third period sailed into an empty net. With 1:20 remaining Caroline Pekkala scored the first empty net goal, not yet having crossed center ice. Emma Breen finished off the day with a goal in the last minute of play. Both Pekkala and Breen were unassisted.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Ellee Kopecky remained in the game for 60 minutes, making 20 saves.
  • Sarah Kerr, Curry's goalie, was on the ice for 59:11 and made a total of 19 saves.
  • Curry went 0-4 on the power play and Salve Regina went 0-5 on the power play.
  • The Seahawks served eight minutes on four infractions.
  • The Colonels were called for five penalties and served ten minutes.
