RUTLAND, Vt. – Junior Sarah Markey (Ashland, Mass.) netted the game-winner with just under four minutes to play to lift the Salve Regina women's ice hockey team to a 3-2 win over University of New England in the consolation game of the Rutland Herald Invitational, Saturday afternoon.

Markey took a pass from sophomore Danielle Phalon (Stoneham, Mass.) on the Seahawks final power play chance of the game to send the puck past the UNE goalie and give Salve Regina 3-2 lead with 3:49 to play. Two minutes prior, senior Shannon Coleman (Chicago, Ill.) tied the game at 2-2 on a power play chance off a pair of assists from senior Monika Borkowski (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and sophomore Shelby Johnson (Sterling, Mass.).

After a scoreless first period for both sides of the ice, Markey kicked off the game's scoring with her fifth goal of the season at 11:27 in the second. Markey's goal was the only tally in the second as Salve Regina goalie sophomore Mariah Mosher (Auburn, Maine) needed just eight saves between the first and second periods to keep UNE off the scoreboard.

UNE netted two straight goals in the third period to take a 2-1 lead with just under eight minutes to play. Emily Corrales took a pass from Jenni Poulin for the only even strength goal of the contest. At 12:03 in the third, Gabby Crugnate gave the Nor'easters a 2-1 lead with an unassisted power play goal. UNE's lead lasted just over two minutes as Coleman's power play tally tied the score before Markey's game-winner.

Mosher made 15 saves in the net for the Seahawks while her Nor'easter counterpart Courtney Kendall made 47 stops in the loss.

Markey finished the Rutland Herald Invitational with three points (2g, 1a) to earn a spot on the All-Tournament team.

Salve Regina returns to the ice when the Seahawks come home for the first time in 2014 when they host Franklin Pierce on Tuesday, January 14 at 7 p.m. at St. George's Ice Rink.
