Mules tie Seahawks in final minute

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College's Megan Fortier (Falmouth, Maine) scored with just 10.7 seconds left in regulation to help the Mules secure a 3-3 overtime tie with Salve Regina University in non-conference women's hockey Friday.

Colby moves to 3-3-1 overall heading into Saturday's 1 p.m. game at University of Southern Maine. Salve Regina is 5-3-2 overall and will play at Sacred Heart on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Fortier ripped a wrist shot into the upper right corner for the tying goal. Eleanor Knutzen (Winchester, Mass.) and Elisa Rascia (Park Ridge, Ill.) had assists on the play. Colby had pulled its goalie to bring on the extra attacker. Fortier scored her team-best fifth of the season.

The Seahawks opened up a 3-1 advantage on a power-play goal by Sarah Markey (Ashland, Mass.) with 13:49 to play in regulation. She poked in a shot in front after Colby had been penalized just 17 seconds earlier. Amanda Cronin (Medfield, Mass.) and Danielle Phalon (Stoneham, Mass.) had assists.

The Mules got back in the game with a power play goal of their own with 8:33 to go in the third period. Kat Mackey (Columbia, Md.) one-timed a shot from close in on the left side for her first collegiate goal. Lauren Guarente (Wellesley, Mass.) and Rascia had assists. Rascia has a team-best six assists for Colby.

After a scoreless first period, Salve Regina opened the scoring when Michaela Chiuccariello (Winchester, Mass.) was sent in on a clean breakaway at mid-ice by teammate Kimberly Spring (Kensington, Conn.). She scored her third goal of the year with 16:49 to play in the second period.

Colby's Kailey Buxbaum (Medway, Mass.) notched her second goal of the year with 12:40 to play in the second period to tie it at 1-1. She scored unassisted from just left of the left post.

The Seahawks took the lead for a second time on another power play goal. Cronin one-timed in a rebound from the right post after the initial shot from the point by Taylor Shepherd (Quincy, Mass.) was saved. Markey also had an assist on the play.

Salve Regina goalie Colleen Marcik (Madison, Conn.) stopped 40 shots, including 13 in the first and 13 more in the third period. Colby keeper Brianne Wheeler (Brussels, Ontario) also was sharp with 29 of her 36 saves in the first and second periods.
