PORTSMOURTH, R.I. - With just 1:04 to play in the final period, senior Samantha Zitzer (River Forest, Ill.) capitalized on Salve Regina's final power play opportunity to lift the Seahawks over Castleton, 2-1, Saturday night at the Portsmouth Abbey. 

With the victory, Salve Regina improved to 9-7-0 overall with a 5-4-0 slate in the ECAC East. With the loss, the Spartans slip to 7-6-3 on the year and 4-3-3 in ECAC East conference action. 

With just 11 seconds left and the scored tied, 1-1, in their final power play chance, Zizter positioned herself to the right of the net to receive a pass from senior Melanie Sherlock (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and freshman Danielle Phalon (Stoneham, Mass.) and launched the puck to the right of the goalie to break the tie. The game-winner was Zizter's second of the season. 

Throughout the first two periods, the two teams played evenly matched, as both teams did now allow a goal on either side of the ice. In fact, the shots were near even as Salve Regina took 13 shots on goal over the first two periods and Castleton took 14.

Just 19 seconds into the third period, Castleton's freshman Anna Daniels (Falun, Sweden) was sent to the penatly box for interference to give SRU its first power play of the period.

Sophomore Michaela Chiuccariello (Winchester, Mass) scored her eighth goal of the year and the first goal of the game with 26 seconds left in the advantage off sophomore Sarah Markey (Ashland, Mass) and senior Sarah McCusker's (Havertown, Pa.) assists. 

Senior Hannah Martini (Fayston, Vt.) put the Spartans on the board with her third goal of the season, knotting the game at 1-1 before Zizter's goal at 18:56 gave Salve Regina the victory. 

Senior Ali Muehlbronner (Glenside, Pa.) stopped 16 shots in the victory while sophomore Paula Stephens (Seattle, Wash.) made 23 saves in the loss for the Spartans.

Salve Regina has a short layoff as the Seahawks host New England College tomorrow, January 20, at Portsmouth Abbey. The opening face off is slated for 2 p.m.
