Seahawks fall to Camels on the road, 6-2
NEW LONDON, Conn. - Senior forward Ariel DiPasquale (Whitestone, N.Y.) had two goals and one assist and sophomore Justina Germano (Westwood, Mass.) scored twice to lead the Connecticut College women's hockey team to a 6-2 victory against visiting Salve Regina University Tuesday.
Samantha Shufenecker (Oswego, N.Y.) and Leigh Getz (Clifton Park, N.Y.) both contributed a goal and an assist in the home opening win for the Camels (1-1-1). Senior net-minder Amy Leichliter (West Chester, Pa.) stopped 27 shots for the hosts.
The Camels vaulted out to an early lead at the 9:05 mark when DiPasquale broke free and went top shelf to make it a 1-0 contest. Later on in the frame just 4:04 away from the intermission, Getz unloaded from the point for a power play goal to make it a 2-0 game.
The Camels put this game away with a critical sequence of plays in the closing minute of the middle period. With 22 seconds left in the period, Shuffenecker stuffed one in to make it a 3-0 Camel lead. Then, on the ensuing face-off, Getz won a face-off to Germano, and the sophomore sharp-shooter took full advantage, finding the back of the net for her first goal of the night.
Salve mounted a comeback midway through the third period, lighting the lamp twice in 1:14 duration to make it a 4-2 contest. The Camels were then sent to the box with 3:45 remaining in regulation and the Hawks emptied the goal to gain a two-woman advantage in the zone.
But with 2:27 remaining, Germano put in a shorty to make it a 5-2 contest. DiPasquale closed out the scoring with another shorthanded goal at 18:14 and the Camels had secured the 6-2 win.
The Seahawks out-shot the Camels 29-to-23 in the contest but the Camels were a perfect 1-for-1 on the power play.
The Camels will host Hamilton College Friday, November 30 for a 7:00 p.m. NESCAC game in Dayton Arena. On the same night, the Seahawks will host the Purple Knights from St. Michael's College for a 7:30 p.m. contest in the Ocean State.
