Crusaders shutout Seahawks, 3-0

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team shut out ECAC East opponent Salve Regina, 3-0, at home on Saturday afternoon with junior Stacey Hochkins (New Boston,Mich.)leading the team with two goals. The win extends the Crusaders four game winning streak and improves their record to 14-6-0 (11-2-0 ECAC East), while the loss puts Salve Regina at 6-10-3 (5-5-2 ECAC East)

 

With just under three minutes left in the first period, Holy Cross junior Nicola Garat (Princeton, N.J.) scored her 15th goal of the season and put the first and only goal of the period on the board off an assist from freshman Kylee Sullivan (Arlington, Mass.). Both the Crusaders and the Seahawks were unable to take advantage of the power play, with the Crusaders strongly outshooting the Seahawks 13-3 in the first period.

 

The second goal of the game came at the 13:02 mark in the second period when Hochkins rifled her 19th goal of the season into the back of the net from in the slot off a pass from senior Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, Saskatchewan) putting the Crusaders up 2-0 over the Seahawks. The Crusaders kept the Seahwawks from scoring while also outshooting them 11-2 in the second period.

 

Hochkins put her 20th goal in the back of the net with five seconds remaining in the game to conclude a strong performance and give the Crusaders a 3-0 win. Holy Cross goalkeeper junior Carly Dominick-Sobol (Syracuse, N.Y.) earned the shutout playing all 60 minutes and stopping 10 shots, while Salve Regina'sgoalkeepers Ali Muehlbronner (Glenside, Pa.) and Rebecca Simmons (Averill Park, N.Y.) shared time in net with Muehlbronner suffering the loss.

 

The Crusaders outshot the Seahawks 40-10, with both teams unable to convert on the power play.Holy Cross returns to the ice for an away contest against ECAC East opponent St. Anselm at 7:00 p.m. on Feb. 4th.
