Crusaders knock off Seahawks, 5-2

WORCESTER, Mass. - A pair of goals by junior forward Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, Saskatchewan) led the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team to victory over Salve Regina, 5-2, in ECAC action on Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center. With the win, Holy Cross improves to 2-0-0 (2-0-0 ECAC), while Salve Regina falls to 2-2-0 (1-1-0 ECAC).

 

The Crusaders put their first score on the board just after three minutes into the game when junior forward Christina D'Ambrogio (Toronto, Ontario) scored from just outside the crease. Holy Cross took the 2-0 advantage at the 17:55 mark when sophomore forward Nicola Garat (Princeton, N.J.) scored off a pass from rookie forward Rebecca O'Quinn (Arlington, Mass.) and D'Ambrogio. The Crusaders went up by three with 10 seconds left in the first period when Kratchmer scored her first goal of the day.

 

Holy Cross scored its fourth goal of the game at the 9:38 mark in the second period when Kratchmer tipped in Wilson's shot from the blue line. The Crusaders added one more at the 7:29 mark in the third period when senior defenseman Lisa Wilson (Corunna, Ontario) found the back of the net for her first goal of the year. Salve Regina broke up the shut out just after 13 minutes into the third period when Drew Chernisky took advantage of the power play opportunity for the Seahawks first goal of the game. Salve Regina scored again with less than two minutes remaining in the game to make the final score 5-2 in favor of Holy Cross.

 

Junior goalie Monique Gallant (Antigonish, Nova Scotia) picked up her first win of the season, allowing just two goals and recording 14 saves. Salve Regina goalie Rebecca Simmons suffered her second loss of the season, allowing five goals and recording 28 saves. Holy Cross outshot Salve Regina 33-16.
