SALVE REGINA UNIVERSITY SEAHAWKS

Southern Maine knocks off Seahawks, 5-2

GORHAM, Maine - Freshman forward Kailey Bubier (Auburn, Maine) and sophomore defenseman Lauren Whiting (Hampton, N.H.) each scored two goals to help the University of Southern Maine defeat Salve Regina University, 5-2, Friday afternoon in an ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Women's East game at the USM Ice Arena.

The win was the third straight for the Huskies and avenged a 2-0 loss at the hands of the Seahawks back in December. The Huskies improved to 10-12-2 overall and 8-10-0 in league play. The Seahawks dropped their fifth straight game to slide to 12-9-3 overall and 9-6-3 in the league.

Bubier's second goal of the game with 1:35 left in regulation, set up by sophomore Katie Paradis (Rochester, N.H.) and freshman Katie Davis (Woburn, Mass.), snapped a 2-2 tie and proved to be the game-winning goal. It was Bubier's team-leading 14th goal of the season.

Sophomore Christen Hart (Saugus, Mass.) and Whiting added unassisted, empty-net goals 22 seconds apart to account for the 5-2 final tally.

After a scoreless opening period, USM broke on top midway through the second period when Bubier potted her first goal of the game, from Paradis and Whiting, at 9:33. Whiting doubled the margin with her first goal, an unassisted marker, at 12:56.

Junior Kendra Andrie (Muskegon, Mich.) put the Seahawks on the board at 17:26 with her third goal of the season. The goal snapped a streak of 158:14 shutout minutes by USM sophomore goaltender Kimmy Flanders (Monson, Mass.).

Freshman Rachel Porter (Franklin Mass.) tied the game at 12:22 of the third period converting an assist from junior Kristen Cokely (Cambridge, Mass.).

Flanders finished the game recording 25 saves. Salve Regina sophomore goalie Rebecca Simmons (Averill Park, N.Y.) made 13 stops on 16 shots before being lifted for the extra attacker.

Southern Maine closes the regular season on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when it hosts Holy Cross. Salve Regina travels to Plymouth State University on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) to conclude the regular season.
