Ellis' OT winner sends Seahawks past Camels, 2-1

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Shannon Ellis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored 28 seconds into overtime to lift the Salve Regina women's hockey team (9-2-2) to a 2-1 victory against Connecticut College (2-10-1) at Dayton Arena Tuesday night.

Kathleen Roche (Boston, Mass.) contributed a goal and an assist for the surging Seahawks, who are 7-0-2 in their last nine games. Sophomore netminder Rebecca Simmons (Averill Park, N.Y.) had 45 saves for the winning side.

Connecticut College junior Kelsey Kirker (Milton, Vt.) stuffed home a power play goal with 1:44 remaining to force the extra session. Rachel Lindmark (Andover, Mass.) assisted on the equalizer. Senior Sara Christopher (Andover, Mass.) made 16 saves in the loss for the Camels.

The Camels pulled their goalie and gained a two-woman advantage in the Seahawk zone when the visitors were assessed with a two-minute minor at 18:07. Lindmark was able to win a battle in the corner and fed Kirker, who made a nifty wrap around move, beating Simmons to the left post.

Connecticut College sophomore Ashleigh Kowtoniuk (Johnstown, Pa.) put together a nice move in the opening moments of the overtime but Simmons was able to get a glove on her high rising blast. On the ensuing faceoff, the Seahawks gained possession of the puck, penetrating the Camel defensive zone. Ellis potted the game-winner from point blank range at the left side of the goal, propelling the Seahawks to the win.

The previous two meetings between these schools had ended in a draw.
