#4 Salve Regina softball to host ECAC first-round

CENTERVILLE, Mass. - With a win already against the tournament's top seed, Salve Regina University softball looks forward to hosting first-round action in the 2014 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Softball Championship. The double-elimination tournament is a six-team field with a quarterfinal round followed by a semifinal and championship round. 

After finishing the regular-season with a 28-12 record, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) was selected as the No. 1 seed.

In the first-round contests on Wednesday, May 7, third seed Smith College (19-13) will host No. 6 seed Albertus Magnus College (17-17) at 4 p.m. while the fourth seed Salve Regina University (20-17) will face No. 5 seed Castleton State College (16-15) at 4:00 p.m. at Toppa Field in Newport.  

The first-round winners will advance to play in the semifinals on Saturday, May 10 at Brandeis University. Game 1 will feature top seed Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) (28-12) and the winner of No. 4 Salve Regina University and No. 5 Castleton State College for a 10 a.m. contest. Host and No. 2 seed Brandeis University (21-16) will face the winner of No. 3 seed Smith College and No. 6 seed Albertus Magnus College at noon. in Game 2 of the double elimination format. The third game on Saturday, May 10 will feature the loser of Game 1 and the loser of Game 2 playing in an elimination game at 2 p.m. Saturday's action concludes with the winner of Game 1 and the winner of Game 2 squaring off in the Winner's Bracket (Game 4) at 4 p.m.

Sunday, May 11 begins with Game 5, featuring the winner of Game 3 and the loser of Game 4 in an elimination game at 11 a.m.  The second contest of the day will be the championship game (Game 6). The championship highlights the winners from Game 4 and Game 5 to be played at 1 p.m.  If necessary, Game 7 will be played immediately following Game 6 to complete the double elimination format.

No. 5 Castleton State College (16-15) at No. 4 Salve Regina University (20-17), 4 p.m.

Double Elimination (Day 1) – Saturday, May 10 at Brandeis University

Game 1: No. 1 Worcester Polytechnic Institute vs. No. 4 Salve Regina/No. 5 Castleton State winner, 10 a.m.
Game 2: No. 2 Brandeis University vs. No. 3 Smith/No. 6 Albertus Magnus winner, Noon
Game 3: Game 1 loser vs. Game 2 loser, 2 p.m.
Game 4: Game 1 winner vs. Game 2 winner, 4 p.m.

Double Elimination (Day 2) – Sunday, May 11 at Brandeis University

Game 5: Game 4 loser vs. Game 3 winner, 11 a.m.
Game 6: Game 4 winner vs. Game 5 winner, 1 p.m.
Game 7: Game 6 winner vs. Game 6 loser, 3 p.m.
