SALVE REGINA UNIVERSITY SEAHAWKS

COME SAIL AWAY

COME SAIL AWAY

Newport, R.I. -- Salve Regina Sailing is set to host its first-ever team racing regatta March 11-12. While the Seahawks have hosted many individual fleet races over the years, this will be the first three-on-three event at the Sail Newport venue here in Newport, Rhode Island. Team racing makes for exciting spectating featuring many boat-on-boat maneuvers that require sailors to use the rules to put their respective team in a better position than the opponent. It is crucial to keep balance upon the vessel while navigating with the wind to maintain the best course through the waves.

There are six boats racing at a time with one point assigned to first place, two points for second, etc. The team with the lowest score wins the race. The competition is typically organized in a bracket format with eliminations in later rounds. Hosting a team racing event raises the profile of Salve Regina's sailing team within college sailing and for younger sailors who are considering joining a team in their college search.

Given the location of the university, Salve Regina has enjoyed a plethora of success from its sailing program, remarkably listed as a Division I co-ed sport here at Salve. Sailing is a unique competition that includes steep competition and requires dedication from all team members.

Spectating will be available at the waterfront near the Fort Adams Visitor Center or Sail Newport Sailing Center. Racing will range from 11-3 Saturday through Sunday, depending on wind conditions.
